Columbia Land Trust
  • We started at Columbia land trust in Vancouver.
    Washington.
  • They are based on Officers Row at Fort Vancouver.

Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge
  • This was our first stop, it was pretty cool. It
    was huge.
  • We learned that Lewis and Clark set up a
    provisionary camp near here.
  • Wilson Cady has been working on this for many
    years.

Cape Horn
  • This was our next stop, it had an amazing view of
    the Columbia River Gorge.
  • You can see some waterfalls on the Oregon side.
  • We learned about a Native American burial island
    that you can barely see.

Stage Coach Stop
  • Our next stop was a stage coach stop near Franz
    Lake (AKA Kidney Lake).
  • This was a Polish stage coach stop.
  • We ate nettle leaves here.
  • They are still looking for more history about
    this structure.

Beacon Rock
  • Was our next stop, it is a big living rock.
  • The Washington government almost blew it up, but
    someone bought and almost sold it to Oregon.

Catherine Creek
  • Was our lunch stop.
  • We learned about many wild flowers.
  • The largest basalt arch in North America is here.
  • We learned about poison oak - Leaves of three
    let them be.

Lyle Balch Cemetery
  • Was our next stop, it was eerie.
  • We learned about Native American burials and saw
    some of these.
  • There was a pioneer who rode for the Pony Express
    buried there.

Western Pond Turtles
  • Was our next stop, they were cute.
  • They are an endangered species.
  • There are only a couple of places that they live
    in Washington.

Granary tree
  • On our next stop we saw Acorn Woodpeckers.
  • The only woodpecker that lives in a colony.
  • In this colony there were 5.

Winery
  • Was our next stop, it was HOT!!!
  • They are trying to restore the native grasses.
    They have done this by planting them in the
    vineyard.
  • Native grasses encourage native insects for
    better pollination.

Flying L Ranch
  • Was our home for the night.
  • We learned about Calliope Humming Birds.
  • The history of the ranch.
  • And that the owners teach orienteering

Owl Prowl
  • Was later that night.
  • We learned about owl calls of the barn owl.
  • Owls come out Day or Night.

Klickitat River
  • Was our second to last stop.
  • Columbia Land Trust bought this haul road from
    the lumber company in Klickitat.
  • We learned about the washed out haul road. They
    are letting the road erode away so the land can
    be as natural as possible.

Fishing grounds
  • Our final stop.
  • The Native American fishing platforms on the
    Klickitat River.

Wilson Cady
  • Was our guide, he was super smart. I learned a
    lot from him.
  • This is me and Wilson.
  • Wilson is an avid birder, he has spotted 680 of
    the 720 species of bird in the lower 48.

Eric Allen
  • Was our other guide and driver.
  • He works at Columbia Land Trust.
  • He helped prepare our delicious dinner ( my Great
    Aunt Deb helped too).
