2- On a crisp day in October Mrs. Martinezs class
was getting ready to go on a field trip to the
science museum. - Everybody on! says Mrs. Martinez.
3- When they got onto the bus Mrs. Martinez started
teaching about magnets, but Benny whispers to
his friends, Anyone want to hear a scary story
about a haunted mansion, crazy butler, and
missing boy? Well it started out one brisk
afternoon
4- and neither the butler or the children were
ever seen again. - As the bus pulled up to the museum Benny finished
his story, and the children were definitely
scared as they approached the old creeky mansion
which strangely resembled the mansion Benny had
just described in his story!
5- Once inside, they were greeted by a very old man
at the information desk. The students split up
and went through all of the exhibits learning
about astronomy, geology, and biology. They met
back together to go home, but realized Phillip
was no where to be found!
6- Mrs. Martinez said, Stay together, I am going to
go look for Phillip! She left and there was a
flash of lightning that made the lights flicker.
Linda began to get nervous and she said, Guys
does this remind anyone else of Bennys story?
Before anyone could agree, Julie responded, Oh
dont be silly, lets go look for him!
7- The class walked into a dark room that was not on
their tour, Benny asked Where are we? - AHHH! Tom shouted, he was sliding slowly
towards the wall.
8- A few seconds later the class realized they were
all stuck to the walls. Whoa! What is going
on?! exclaims Linda.
9- Duh guys. Werent you listening to Mrs. Martinez
on the bus. The walls are permanent magnets which
is why everything metallic of ours is sticking to
the wall. Responds GeeGee. Everyone slid along
the wall until they reached the door to the next
room, where they were no longer stuck to the
walls.
10- The next room was just as creepy as the first.
At least we arent stuck to the walls in this
room. Linda said cheerfully. Just then there was
another scary flash of lightning and they heard
the sound of a switch being flipped. The class
was starting to slide to the walls again. Tom
moaned, Oh no! Not again! Were never going to
find Mrs. Martinez and Phillip. Just then the
class heard the switch being flipped again and
they were no longer stuck to the walls.
Something is not right here. Julie exclaimed
and she started feeling along the wall. Ah ha!
She exclaimed and she turned on a light switch
that lit a corner of the room and revealed who
had been making them stick to the wall!
11PHILLIP! The class all shouted. Oh, hey guys!
Did I scare you? I just saw this switch and I
wondered what it did! Phillip replied. But, how
did that switch make us stick to the wall and not
permanately stick to the walls like in that other
room? Tom asked. It all makes sense! GeeGee
proclaimed. Its just like Mrs. Martinez was
explaining. The first room was a permanent magnet
room, this room is just an electromagnetic room.
Mrs. Martinez told us that an electromagnet that
is a soft metal core that turns into a magnet
with and electric current! Thats why when we
first came in we didnt stick to the walls. Then
Phillip flipped the switch causing the walls
which must have a soft metal core to gain a
charge thus making our metal objects magnetized
to the walls. Oh! The class said in agreement.
Just then the door opened and Mrs. Martinez came
in. There you are! Time to go, class!
12- The class walked outside of the museum and was
getting on the bus when they heard the creepy
voice of the old man from the information desk
say, Thank you for coming. Come again soon! And
the door of the museum creaked shut.
13The End
Teacher Helps Before there are magnet
explanations, ask the children if they know why
the walls are behaving the way they are. Allow
children to experiment with magnets after the
story.
