    needed.
  • Americans bought products such as clothing,
    appliances, make-up, and services.
  • The first type of credit was lay-a-way.

5
Advertising
  • Advertising convinced Americans they needed to
buy products to be the most attractive, stylish,
or modern person in their social circle.

6
Washington Naval Conference
  • The goal of this conference was to reduce or
eliminate the arms race after WWI.
  • The US, Britain, Japan, Italy, and France agreed
to large-scale disarmament. They signed the Five
    Power Treaty.
  • This was successful -many nations were disarmed.

7
Dawes Plan
  • Coolidge wanted the private sector to become
    involved in US Foreign Policy.
  • He convinced France to reduce German war debt and
convinced American bankers to give loans to
    Germany.
  • Debate in class Is this an isolationist policy?

8
Dawes Plan
9
Isolationism at Home
  • QUOTAS restricted the number of immigrants from
each nation who could come into America.
  • In 1924, the National Origins Act passed. It
based quotas on the 1890 census.
  • President Harding rationalized this action by
saying it would promote social stability after
a tumultuous few years during and after WWI.
