American Elections
  • Today and in 1920

2
Political Parties
  • Whereas in Britain there are several political
parties, in America there are only two the
Republicans and the Democrats. The elephant
represents the Republicans while the Democrats
    symbol is the donkey.
  • Roughly, the Democrats equate to Labour while the
Republicans are in line with the Conservatives.

3
The 2008 Election
  • At the last election, Barak Obama was the
    Democrat candidate.
  • John McCain stood for the Republican party.
  • After 8 years of Republican rule, Obama won the
    election for the Democrat party.

Internationalism vs Isolationism
  • After World War One, America was divided as to
what their role in the world should be.
  • Woodrow Wilson, the Democrat President, wanted
America to take a lead in world affairs he
thought up the League of Nations.
  • Other politicians were not so sure, they felt the
U.S.A should isolate herself from world affairs.

6
The 1920 Election
  • The 1920 election centred around this very topic.
  • Democrat James Cox followed Wilsons view as an
    internationalist.
  • The Republican, Warren Harding, claimed America
should keep to herself. He wanted a return to
normalcy a word he invented himself. He
claimed he would put America First.
  • This election would discover what the American
    public felt.
