• The Liberal Democrats were formed on 3 March
  19883 as a result of a merger between the
  Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party, as
  such the party has the legacy of both the Liberal
  Party and the old Labour right the Liberals were
  themselves descended from the British Whig Party.
