Title: DAY 3
1DAY 3 GROUP 4 PROJECT BIOLOGY
2AIM TO PLAN AN INVESTIGATION
TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF A CARBOHYDRATE DIET
ON THE FITNESS OF A SKIER
3(No Transcript)
4KEY POINTS
CARBOHYDRATES PROVIDE 16KJ OF ENERGY
CARBOHYDRATE IS STORED AS GLYCOGEN IN THE
MUSCLES AND LIVER.
THE PROPORTION OF CARBOHYDRATE (GLYCOGEN) USED
INCREASES WITH EXERCISE INTENSITY AND DECREASES
WITH EXERCISE DURATION
5The recommended amount is a diet containing 60
- 70 of carbohydrates
Most athletes need to consume 6 - 10g of
carbohydrate/ kg body weight/ day.
FOR ALL TYPES OF EXERCISE PERFORMANCE IS LIMITED
BY THE AMOUNT OF GLYCOGEN IN THE MUSCLES.
6METHOD
7HYPOTHESIS
HIGH CARB DIET
GLYCOGEN LEVELS WILL INCREASE BECAUSE AS THE
LEVEL INCREASES THE HORMONE INSULIN DETECTS THE
EXCESS GLUCOSE AND STORES IT AS GLYCOGEN
THEREFORE THE PARTICPANTS ON THE HIGH CARB DIET
WILL BE ABLE TO EXERCISE HARDER AND LONGER
8LOW CARBOHYDRATE DIET
GLYCOGEN LEVELS WILL FALL AS THERE WILL BE A
LIMITED SUPPLY DUE TO THE LACK OF CARBOHYDRATES
BEING EATEN IN THAT DIET.
THEREFORE THE PARTICIPANT WILL HAVE LOW GLYCOGEN
STORES AND WILL EXPERIENCE FATIGUE MORE QUICKLY
AND FIND IT HARDER TO CONTINUE EXERCISE.
NORMAL DIET
GLYCOGEN LEVELS WILL DIFFER FOR THE INDIVIDUAL
PARTICIPANT AS THEY WILL HAVE DIFFERENT MENTAL
ENDURANCE AND PHYSICAL FITNESS LEVELS.
