How children see art..
  • The arts is a way of being able to express
yourself and take an idea and stretch it and turn
it into something that may be different. I like
all the arts because they just make me feel like
there is something in me that I can do and do it
    really well. (Jessica)

How children see art..(continued)
  • Art can be everything you do, its like the
whole world is a piece of art. There are patterns
everywhere and everything happens for a reason
and its all part of art (Katie)

  • positively impact on relationships between
    artist, schools and communities
  • help children to relate better to themselves and
    each other
  • reach students who are not being reached through
    traditional methods and
  • provide learning opportunities for the adults in
the lives of children and young people.

What the Theorists think
  • Wolf Gardner (1980) propose four major stages
    of the childs artistic growth.
  • The Child
  • as a direct communicator (0-2yrs)
  • As a playful symbol user and physical explorer
    (2-7yrs)
  • as craftsman and sender of messages (5-11yrs) and
    hopefully
  • as participant in the full range of artistic
    activity (adolescence)
  • (McMahon, Olive, 1991, pp5)

7
  • Both play and art are concerned with individuals
and/or groups exploring and constructing meaning,
coming to terms with the internal, social and
objective worlds to create an acceptable
    reality.
  • (McMahon, Olive, 1991, pp 7)

8
Integrating art into other KLAs
  • Art can easily integrated into many other KLAs,
either as an alternative way of completing an
activity or as a tool to get a certain message or
    strategy across.
  • The curriculum initiative Integrated Curriculum
often uses art mediums as a support tool for
KLAs such as Maths, English and Teachnology.

9
Technology and the Arts
  • Computers are increasingly becoming a huge factor
in education today, as is the many other new
technologies that coincide with the computer,
such as digital cameras, projectors, scanners etc.

10
  • Using the arts as a tool for teaching Technology
is both a useful, innovative and FUN way for
    students to learn.
  • For those students who are not confident in art,
technology gives them the tools to create work
that they can be proud of.

11
Ways in which students can create artwork on the
computer are activities such as
  • Scanning a picture and then manipulating it
through programs such as Kid pix, making it their
    own.
  • Scanning photos of their family to create a
power point of their family tree, etc.
  • Making a story book in Flip Album.

12
What art means to me as a person.
  • Art has always been a major part of my life, it
is something that I have depended on to express
my feelings and to grow as an individual.
  • It encourages me to explore different mediums and
subjects that I would not normally look into.
  • It provides me with something I am passionate
about and with something that I am good at.

13
What art means to me as a teacher.
  • It is something that I can use as a tool for my
students to fell free to express themselves.
  • Helps me see insight into where my students are
    socially and academically.
  • Provides me with a tool to help those struggling
    with other KLAs
