ITTO MISSIONS

    associated recommendations
  • Decision 5(XXXI) Strengthening SFM and
    Controlling Illegal Logging in Indonesia taken
    based on results of Indonesia mission, encouraged
    projects to implement mission recommendations

ITTO PROJECTS
  • Over 5 million spent to date on country
    projects with objectives dealing with
    controlling illegal logging, improving FLE
  • Bolivia, Cameroon, Congo, Ghana, Honduras,
    Indonesia, Peru, Thailand
  • Often involve log tracking and statistical
    techniques
  • Many include strengthening community involvement
    as means of improving control

  • Many other projects (e.g. community forestry,
    legislative reform, transboundary conservation,
    CI, etc.) can contribute to better governance
    and law enforcement
  • ITTO working with GFW/WRI through Decision

    monitoring in CAR, Rep. Congo and DRC

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
  • International conferences arising from
    recommendations of 2004 TAG/CSAG Panel on Illegal
    Logging / Illegal Timber Trade
  • transportation of timber products, involving
    representatives of financial institutions,
    customs, shipping, and transport sectors, with
    the view of identifying weaknesses which have
    allowed for illegal trade
  • indigenous and other community forestry, forest
    tenure, policy and other regulatory barriers to
    management and trade, and their relationships to
    illegal logging and illegal trade

  • Extension of concession monitoring work in Africa
    with ATIBT, GFW (possible EU funding)
  • Civil Society Private sector partnership grants
  • small grants (lt US50,000) to promote SFM by
    small concession-holders
  • first to PT Hutanindo/Tropical Forest Trust in
    Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, aiming to have
    100,000 ha concession independently certified
