  • Some Canadian mining companies have been
implicated in cases of human rights violations
and major environmental degradation in countries
of the Global South, jeopardizing the health,
security and well-being of entire communities.

30
  • Too often, the voice of those affected is not
respected when decisions about mining operations
    are made.

31
  • Canadian mining companies must be transparent in
their overseas activities and must conduct them
in a socially and environmentally responsible
    manner.

32
  • Last year, more than 153,000 people petitioned
the government to call Canadian mining companies
    to account.

33
The final report of a recent national
consultation echoed this request. It recommended
adopting Canadian standards to assess the social
and environmental performance of mining companies.
The National Roundtables on Corporate Social
Responsibility and the Canadian Extractive
Industry in Developing Countries.
34
Therefore, I support Development and Peace in
asking the Canadian government to
35
  • Assume the recommendations of a recent national
    consultation, including the immediate
    establishment of an ombudspersons office.

36
  • The ombudspersons office must be
  • Independent
  • Investigative
  • Accessible
  • Effective
  • Transparent

37
  • This office would
  • Receive and investigate complaints
  • Make recommendations to ensure that human rights
and the environment is respected by Canadian
    mining companies
  • Publish its results
