The Medical Model
problem for the individual that only a cure will
solve
denies value, worth and individuality as
individuals do not meet accepted norms of our
society
also known as the tragedy or charity model
perpetuates how disabled people are often viewed
in society
19
The Social Model
Impairment
Injury, illness, or congenital condition that
causes or is likely to cause a long-term effect
on physical appearance and/or limitation of
function within the individual that differs from
the commonplace
Disability
The loss or limitation of opportunities to take
part in society on an equal level with others due
to social and environmental barriers. .
20
The Social Model
Disability caused by barriers which take little
or no account of people who have impairments
Society disables people who have impairments
So lets remove the barriers.
21
The C-FOA DRC Guidance to managers.
The Fire Service must
... make reasonable adjustments for job
applicants or employees.
...develop an inclusive culture in which disabled
firefighters are treated fairly.
...ensure ALL staff have basic understanding of
the DDA.
...work with OHU and medical advisers to reach
decisions about making adjustments, redeploying
or dismissing a disabled employee.
... make decisions WITH disabled employees not
ABOUT them.
... adopt a 'can do' creative approach to
managing disability.
22
The Fire Service must NOT...
...directly discriminate against a disabled job
applicant or employee because of their disability
... subject a disabled job applicant or employee
to disability-related discrimination
... make decisions about a person's capability
based purely on medical evidence.
...subject disabled employees to harassment or
victimisation because of their disability.
