Need-Based Off-Campus Employment
  • Under limited circumstances, F-1 students are
  • eligible to apply for need-based off-campus
  • employment.
  • Severe Economic Hardship Employment
  • Must prove that severe economic hardship exists
    due to unforeseen circumstances
  • Extensive application process with a 340
    application fee
  • Authorization requires special permission from
  • the United States Citizenship and Immigration
  • Services (USCIS).

F-1 Practical Training
  • Employment authorization for the purpose of
  • practical training in your academic field of
    study.
  • Two types of Practical Training
    (PT)
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT)
  • To be eligible for Practical Training, you must
  • Have maintained status for the equivalent of 1
    full academic year (at SU or another
    institution) and
  • Not be enrolled in an English language training
    program

J-1 Academic Training
  • Practical work experience authorized for J-1
  • students in their academic field of study.
  • Regulations governing J-1 Academic Training
  • are different than those for F-1 Practical
    Training.
  • Academic Training must be applied for and then
    authorized by your J program sponsor.

On-Campus Employment
  • On-Campus Employment
  • The University is the employer
  • - Receive a check directly from Syracuse
    University (or SUNY-ESF)
  • Work provides direct services to the Universitys
    students
  • Syracuse University (SU) students may only work
    on the SU campus
  • SUNY-ESF students may work on either the SU or
    ESF campus

Maintaining Status On-Campus Employment
Eligibility
  • In order to be employed at Syracuse University or
    SUNY-ESF,
  • you must
  • Be enrolled full-time in classes or have
    submitted a request to study less than full-time
    (e.g., reduced course load, last semester of
    study)
  • -- Graduate 9 credits Undergraduate 12
    credits
  • Receive a job offer and permission to work
  • -- If SU athlete, complete the Student-Athlete
    Employment Clearance Process
  • at the Manley Field House Compliance Office
  • -- If J-1 student sponsored by an organization
    other than SU or ESF, obtain a letter from your
    sponsor approving your on-campus employment
  • -- If ELI student, obtain letter from ELI
    verifying full-time status work eligibility
  • Complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility
    Verification Process
  • -- SU and SUNY ESF working on SU Campus

On-Campus Employment Limitations
  • Employment limitations
  • You may only work 20 hours/ week while school is
    in session
  • - May hold more than one job on campus as long
    as the cumulative
  • number of hours worked does not exceed
    20 hrs/week
  • - On-campus employment and CPT If amount
    to over 20 hours of work a week cumulatively,
    CPT must be registered as full-time
  • Work is an on-campus non-federal work study job
  • - To search for jobs at SU, access HR Job
    Opportunities and search under Workstudy
    AND Non-Workstudy Students

  • - International students are eligible for

  • You may work full-time (typically 40

The I-9 Process for Students Working on the SU
Campus
  • Have your future employer complete and print the
    SU Student Certificate Employment Verification
    Form on department letterhead
  • - If SU athlete, have employer and coach
    complete necessary section on the
  • Student Athlete Employment Form and submit
    completed form to the Manley Field
  • House Compliance Office
  • Bring the following documents to the Slutzker
    Center in order to complete the I-9 process
  • - Gold ½ sheet On-Campus Employment Seminar
    Form from seminar
  • - Original Employment Verification Form
    from future employer
  • - Original I-20/DS-2019, passport, visa, I-94
    card, SS card if you have one
  • - 1 set of copies of I-20/DS-2019, passport,
    visa, I-94 card SS card if you have one
  • - Copy of your current class schedule indicating
    number of credits registered
  • - If SU Athlete, copy of your completed
    Student Athlete Employment Form
  • - If sponsored J student, letter from
    sponsor approving on-campus work
  • - If ELI student, letter from ELI
    indicating full-time status and work eligibility
  • Complete the Non-Resident Alien Information Form
    online necessary to verify eligibility for a
    tax withholding exemption
  • Your I-9 is valid until program end date. If
    you shorten/extend your program,
  • verify with the Slutzker Center that your I-9
    was updated as well.

Obtaining a Social Security Number as an SU
Employee
  • To qualify for a Social Security Number you must
  • Maintain your status
  • Complete the I-9 process
  • -- Have a job offer (in this situation,
    on-campus)
  • -- Have employer complete Employment
    Verification Form
  • -- Submit required immigration documents
  • -- Have Slutzker Center endorse your
    Employment Verification Form
  • Obtain endorsed Employment Verification Form from
    Slutzker Center
  • Apply at the Social Security Office in the
    Federal Building downtown
  • (100 S. Clinton St.)
  • -- Original I-20/Ds-2019, passport, visa,
    I-94 card, Employment Verification Form
  • -- Be sure to indicate a serviceable
    mailbox so the SS card does not get sent back

I-9 and SSN Process for SUNY-ESF Students Working
on ESF Campus
  • Have SUNY-ESF Human Resources (216 Bray Hall)
    complete and print the SUNY-ESF Student
    Certificate Employment Verification Form on
    department letterhead
  • Complete the I-9 process at Human Resources (216
    Bray Hall)
  • Bring your completed SUNY-ESF Student Certificate
    Employment Verification Form to the Slutzker
    Center (310 Walnut Place)
  • Obtain endorsed SUNY-ESF Student Certificate
    Employment Verification Form from the Slutzker
    Center
  • Apply at the Social Security Office in the
    Federal Building downtown
  • -- Original I-20, passport, visa, I-94
    card, Employment Verification Form
  • Once you receive a Social Security Card, bring
  • -- The original Social Security (SS) card to
    Human Resources (216 Bray Hall)
  • -- A copy of the SS card with your SU ID on it
    to the Slutzker Center
  • I-9 is valid until program end date. If you
    shorten/extend your program,
  • bring your new I-20/DS-2019 to Human Resources
    for I-9 update.

Workers Responsibility
  • If you have accepted a job offer from an
    employer, you are expected to show up for work
    on-time at each designated shift.
  • If you will be unable to work a shift, it is
    your responsibility to contact your employer in
    advance so that a replacement can be found.
  • If you no longer plan to work for an employer you
    accepted a job offer from, you must contact
    him/her to officially terminate your employment.

  • To download forms and find more information on

  • Keep all of your immigration and employment
    documents together and in a safe placeyou may
    need them for future immigration applications
    (e.g., OPT)

  • Check all of the expiration dates on your
    documents and be aware of when they expire
