Title: Scholarship Search Engine

Scholarship Search Engine
  • Assignment 2

Background
  • In this presentation, you will first see a
screenshot of one of the webpages from my
    Scholarship Search Engine website.
  • Then you will find a slide explaining some of my
thoughts and ideas about that webpage.

Introduction Page
  • I personally lean towards a very simple, classic
design. (I love Googles webpage because of its
simple yet functional design.) This is why you
wont find a lot of graphics or unnecessary
    images on this website.
  • I also think it is important to provide
continuity between pages on the same site (you
dont want the user to click on an internal
link and think he/she has left your site). This
is why you will find the same blue header on all
    the webpages.

Introduction (2)
  • I also wanted to ensure easy navigation within
the site. This is why each page has the same
navigation menu located on the left of the
    screen.
  • I really liked the idea of having a quick keyword
search. I ran across this on several scholarship
websites. For example, if you want to see all
scholarships that are associated with horses you
just typed in the word horse.

Profile Search Page
  • For each of the text area boxes, I attempted to
choose data that was relevant to Auburn. For
example, I looked in the AU Bulletin to obtain a
list of the colleges and majors available at
Auburn. If I was to continue development on this
search engine, I would work with the
administration at Auburn to ensure I had a
    complete listing.
  • I could not get a good listing for all the sports
that were available at Auburn. I tried and tried
to go to the athletics department website
    (www.auburntigers.com) but their website was
always down when I went to it. However, what I
show should be sufficient enough for a paper
design. Of course, I would work with the
Athletic Department to ensure I had all athletics
listed if this were going to be a real
    scholarship search engine.

Profile Search (2)
  • While researching scholarship websites, I
realized there were numerous things you could
include in a profile search (such as religion,
heritage, parents work associations, etc). I
attempted to chose the items I felt would be most
    beneficial to Auburn students.
  • The next step would be to present this to the
customer (i.e. Dr. Seals) and discuss any further
    items she would want added.

  • I wanted to keep with Auburns colors in my
table. However, I found it very difficult to
read the scholarship names with the bright orange
and dark blue. Therefore, I decided on a
compromise. I kept the header row the dark blue
and made the font orange, but the rest of the
rows I used a black font and white or a light
    background color.
  • I wanted to shade the alternating rows to ease
readability but still keep with the color
palette. To achieve this, I took Auburns orange
color and diluted it then, I made this the
background color for my alternating rows.
Hopefully, this made the scholarship names,
    amounts, and deadlines more readable.

  • Interesting Side Note The scholarships listed
are real scholarships that were returned when I
did a keyword search for horse at the
    collegeboard.com website.

Scholarship Detail View
  • Initially, I was going to copy the information on
one of the scholarships that was returned with my
horse quick search. Then I got concerned that
might be seen as plagiarism since I would be
copying the scholarship information word for
word. Therefore, I just decided to make up a
    fake scholarship.
  • I decided to make the look of the scholarship
detail view similar to the profile search page.
I did this to provide continuity throughout the
site. I felt the profile search page did a good
job of presenting information in a clear,
easy-to-read format, so I used the same style
(i.e. bold words and horizontal lines) to make
the scholarship detail view easily readable as
    well.

  • Side Note Before I included it, I did make sure
that www.bigbucksferrari.com was not a real
website (at least not when I checked for it).
