Introduction
  • Background
  • Technical Consultant
  • Aviation Instructor at Victor Valley College
  • Served in U. S. Air Force for 26 years
  • Rank of Squadron First Sergeant

3
Math in the Field
  • Chart reading
  • Problem solving
  • Use of Formulas

4
How Force Is Produced
5
Vocabulary
  • Cylinder
  • Bore
  • Stroke
  • Piston
  • Piston Displacement

6
What is a cylinder?
  • Cylinder is the component in an internal
    combustion (reciprocating) engine which houses
the piston and valves. The cylinder(s) form the
    combustion chamber(s) of the engine

7
What is a piston?
  • Piston is a movable plug inside the cylinder of
    an internal combustible (reciprocating) engine
that moves up and down to compress the fuel-air
mixture and to transmit the force from the
expanding gases in the cylinder to the
    crankshaft.

8
What is a bore?
  • Bore is the diameter of the inside of the
    cylinder of an internal combustion
    (reciprocating) engine.

BORE Diameter RADIUS ½ diameter or bore
BORE
9
What is a stroke?
  • Stroke is the linear distance the piston moves
inside the cylinder from the top to the bottom.

10
What is piston displacement?
  • Piston displacement is the total volume in cubic
inches, cubic centimeters, or liters swept by all
of the piston(s) of an internal combustible
(reciprocating) engine as they move in one
    revolution of the crankshaft.

Variables/Formula
12
Example
Art wants to compute the stroke height in a six
cylinder engine with a piston displacement of
301.5936 cubic inches. The engine has a bore of
4 inches, a cylinder height of 7inches. What will
be the height of the stroke for this engine?
(hint ½ the diameter is the radius) Using the
formula
Solution The height of the stroke for this
engine is approximately 4 inches.
13
Guided Practice
Alicen want to compute the stroke height in a
four cylinder engine with a piston displacement
of 100.5312 cubic inches. The engine has a bore
of 4 inches, a cylinder height of 5 inches. What
will be the height of the stroke for this engine?
(hint ½ diameter is radius)
Solution The height of the stroke for this
engine is approximately 2 inches.
14
Independent Practice
Alicen and Art want to compute the stroke height
of a six cylinder engine with a piston
displacement of 1187.5248 cubic inches. The
engine has a bore of 6 inches, a cylinder height
of 12 inches. What will be the height of the
stroke for this engine? (hint ½ diameter is the
radius).
Solution The height of the stroke for this
engine is approximately 7 inches.
