• Increasing proportion of the population is over
  65, and increasing number living alone
• More older people more services
• needed to support both
• the illnesses of old age
• AND more preventative services

•  Estimated will increase by 10 over the next 5
  years, but by over 40 by 2021
• The rise in over 85s is even more pronounced
  where one third are likely to end up as users of
  social services.

Response to the rising population

• Promote healthy ageing keeping people active,
  tackling social isolationetc.
• Supporting carers to carry on providing care at
  home
• Offer a better range of housing options
• Helping people to better help themselves
• Mainstream services and independent and voluntary
  sector will have an increasing role

Changing ethnic diversity

• Marked contrasts in the ethnic diversity of the
  aging population.

Mental health problems

• Factors such as social exclusion or stress can
  put people at risk
• Variables important such as poor housing,
  transport, high crime rates, abuse and violence,
  inequality and poverty
• Nationally it is estimated that between 1 in 8
  and 1 in 5 will have depression or severe
  depression

Mental ill health

• Less than 1 in 4 of those with mental health
  problems are working, nearly half of incapacity
  claimants
• Carers more likely to also have complex problems

Response

• Under recognised and need to clarify what works
  and make it happen!
• Supporting people to remain in or return to
  employments will pay dividends
• Supported housing options to support chance of
  recovery
• Access to therapies, exercise, creative arts and
  leisure
• Carers need to be better supported

Dementia

• One of the main causes of disability later in
  life
• Steady and dramatic rise over the next 15 years
• Occupancy of beds in elderly persons homes
  currently occupied BY 25 of older people with
  dementia issues.
• In nursing homes this rises to over 30

Response

• Early diagnosis and intervention is key to delay
  admission to long term care
• Supporting people at home is good practice but
  carers need substantial support to do this.
• New homes?
