2Module Guidelines
- This module has been created to further develop
skills in film production technology. - The skills acquired in the pre-booked equipment
training sessions can be entered into your
equipment passport books. - These can then be signed by your tutors, so that
you are officially allowed to book the equipment
during your own time. - This is not just about completing a university
module but about professional progression that
will be recognised by the Film Production
Industry.

5- In groups of 6/7 you are required to function as
a self managed film crew. - You are not allowed to change groups under any
circumstances. - Each film crew is expected to develop a shooting
script based on a POEM and each team member
allocated their own responsibilities. - In the 2nd semester the group will use the
shooting script to produce a 5 minute film piece
(to professional standards) that considers the
importance of both sound and image. - During the 1st 12 weeks you will develop film
production skills in Sound, Lighting, Jib and
Tracking use. (Please consider how these skills
will be used in the 5 minute production). - You will be assessed on these skills during three
workshops and through peer and tutor led
practical assessments. - There will also be a brief introduction to Avid.

7Peer Assessment 1 - Sound
- High quality sound recording is essential in all
video and films. - Each microphone has a certain polar response and
should therefore be selected carefully depending
on the location and shot. - Care taken when you record your sound will on
Post Production techniques. - As a pair/group study location sound recording
using the rifle and radio microphones. - Learn how to connect the microphones to the
Marantz PMD670s and thoroughly understand the
audio controls on the recorder. - Practice using the two main microphones and
record 15 to 30 seconds of dialogue in 6
different places to test the quality of the
sound. - Using a single XL1 camera, shoot a conversation
between two people, showing how you are using the
Marantz and the microphones. - Edit the shots together using the sound from the
Marantz and think about continuity. - During the peer assessment, the group will
critique the quality of the audio. Composition
of shots is also important. - It is essential the sound is of the highest
quality and there is no distortion of any kind. - Use this opportunity to plan which microphones
will be required for the 3 x 2min film. - (Final assessment Sound/Dialogue with
image/conversation (2min))

9Peer Assessment 2 - Lighting
- NB Health and safety issues in relation to
lighting - (Do not directly touch or handle lights that are
in use or have just been used without protective
clothing. Lights are extremely hot and consider
that this heat is also capable of setting fire to
objects or fabrics located near to a lighting
source). - This assessment has been designed to improve
lighting skills. - In pairs or as a group etc. study creative
lighting techniques. - Light in 3 different locations using your own
research and the lighting techniques discussed in
the lecture. - Use a wide shot to show the lighting setup.
- Then show how lighting techniques have improved
your results. - For example a shot prior to lighting and then
after the lighting setup. - Consider using the gels, reflectors, silks etc.
- Practice lighting until you are satisfied with
the quality of the results. - During the group peer assessment you will
critique both the quality of lighting and shot
composition. - Use this opportunity to develop ideas for the
final lighting assignment. - (Final assessment - Lighting shots with Foley
effects (2min))
10PRE-BOOKED EQUIPMENT DATES LIGHTING
11Peer Assessment 3 - Jib and Tracking
- NB Health and safety issues
- (The weight, movement, assembly and disassembly
of this equipment can result in injury if it has
not been properly considered. Please also view
the training video that will be available on the
filmtechnology.info site) - In a pair or as the group the task is to show
practical experimentation, you need to consider
health and safety issues while utilising the
tracking and mini jib. - Groups have been allocated timetabled slots to
access the pre-booked equipment. - Each group has to ensure they are available
during these times. - Swapping of times is possible if you have a
suitable and willing group to swap with. (Your
Tutors need to be informed if this happens) - Shoot various shots as demonstrated and depicted
by Peter Rudge in the Jib, tracking and grip
workshop. - Ensure the shots are used aesthetically and for
narrative purposes. - During the peer assessment the group will
critique each others tracking and jibs shots and
grade them on professional quality. - Overall composition of shots is an important
consideration throughout all work. - (Final assessment Jib/ Tracking shots with
music (2min)) -

13Peer Assessment Details

group will peer assess and grade each others work
or the group as a whole. - Use these opportunities to critique evaluate and
discuss the quality of the work with each other
and the academic staff. - All peer assessment marks must be recorded and
submitted to your tutors at the end of each
sessions. - This is worth 20 of the final grade for the
module and is mandatory. - All peer assessment marks are graded out of ten.
- The assignment work must be completed and
displayed to your allocated group every second
week. - It is vital to attend and complete the work
because it counts towards 20 of your individual
module mark and your signed equipment passport
books. - You will peer assess each others work and decide
what marks each student deserves based on the
quality of their work. - The group will decide which student or students
have produced the best practical work and award
that member the highest mark. - If you would prefer to work in pairs/groups etc.
within the group for the practical aspect you
can, but you will be awarded the same peer
assessment mark. - Your tutors will be available during this time to
record your marks and check your progress. - Your grades during your peer assessment will be
agreed to, recorded and signed by each member of
the group. - IMPORTANT Assessment Deadlines
