I dont know what to expect from this program I
feel excited, nervous...
curious, joy, shock, enthusiastic, anxious,
proud, overwhelmed, crazy
Im excited...I hope I make valuable friendships
and gain valuable skills.

In October 2006, four outstanding Visual Arts
students from four different high schools in
New South Wales participated in the ARTside-in!
Stage 3 Mentorship Program at the Art Gallery of
New South Wales.

The students attend schools which participated
in Stages 1 and 2 of the ARTside-in! outreach
program run by the Public Programs Department of
the AGNSW and sponsored by the Caledonia
Foundation. Students from each participating
school then applied to be part of the
Mentorship. Only one student from each school
was selected.

The mentorship is a great opportunity for
students like myself especially since I want to
be a curator.
.it is one of those once in a lifetime
opportunities.
It will be fun being around intelligent girls who
share the same interests they are really nice

On Friday October 13, 2006, the students, their
parents and teachers came to the Art Gallery for
an Information Session and to meet the Gallery
Educators who would be with them for the four
days of the Mentorship. Afterwards they attended
the opening of the Goddess Divine Energy
exhibition.

It was so good. Emma explained things and made
them seem easy when they were hard. She was a
great mentor. I had so much fun. We never stopped
running!

I learned that everything about the art gallery
had a massive, massive thought process! Anne
went through each step involved in acquisition,
storage, placement etc. of an artwork.

It opened my eyes to a lot of things in the
artworld and Anne was an awesome teacher, very
educated and intelligent.

I learnt that every painting has a story behind
its making. I saw the ultraviolet photos taken
to show what was hidden behind the art and the
conservators authenticating the work. I found
out how cracks were formed, how they were painted
in and how the varnish changes the effect of the
painting.

I learnt so much about framesIll never look at
a frame in the same way again.

At the end of each day we returned to the
meeting room to discuss and document our
day. We were each given a Visual Arts Process
Diary to record everything in.

Today was amazing we met with the inspirational
Ben Quilty he listened and answered all our
questions we talked about techniques and ideas
. it was so fantastic.

sketches as we could we were collecting
ideas and practicing skills at the same time.

Ben is so down to earth. He didnt even know us
and he let us touch his paintings!
My friends are going to be so jealous!

I think one of the main things we learned from
Ben is to draw everything. Now we just draw
everything everywhere we go.

On Day 3 we went to Sherman Galleries, the
National Art School and Sothebys Auction House.

Sherman galleries was really interesting and the
man Simeon explained so much we had no questions
to ask!
It was good to learn the differences between the
commercial and state galleries.

The National Art school was AWESOME we saw
bronze being poured the fire was so hot it

This experience has really opened my eyes to a
lot of different things.I didnt realise how
much was involved in getting one exhibition
together
Everyone was so very friendly and easy to talk to.
It helped a lot with thinking about future career
paths...Ill take away information I can use
throughout my life as an artist.

We talked about our different backgrounds. We
are so different but also quite similar.
It was so fun and so different from what I would
normally get to experience.
One thing we learnt was, a VAPD doesnt have to
be prettyit just has to have a whole lot of
stuff exploding into your face.

I got an insight into the core of the Art world
the mechanics of the Art world.
It has opened my mind with possibilities. I have
a much less narrow idea of what is involved.
My expectations were fulfilled and exceeded. The
program gave me hope in terms of a career.
