23Teens Preventing Dating Violence in The Holland
Sentinel
Local program educates students about abuse
situations Upward Bound participants can choose
to take the course By MEGAN SCHMIDT The Holland
Sentinel Posted Jul 19, 2009 _at_ 0430 AM Holland,
MI Lesley Coghill posed a question to her
students during her teen dating violence class
earlier this summer. She told them that one in
three people knows someone who has been abused in
a relationship physically, sexually or
mentally. She asked if they thought that
statistic was accurate. They said, We think
everybody knows somebody, said Coghill,
coordinator for domestic violence prevention
program the D.E.L.T.A. Project. We think its
not just one in three but every one of
us. Coghill taught the class as part of Upward
Bound, a tutoring program designed to prepare
high school students for college. On Tuesday
night, students from her class performed skits
centered around the topic of dating violence at
UB Live, which featured students live
performances and a food fair. Students also
designed posters, created a Web page and a video
and participated in a pledge drive to get the
message across, Coghill said. Those messages
include how to detect signs of abuse and what to
do if youre a bystander to violence, Coghill
said. The 18 students who took Coghills class
met twice a week for six weeks. Their
participation was voluntary, as Upward Bound
students may choose any of a number of elective
courses, she said. Most of them said they had a
personal interest in the topic or wanted to do
something about it, she said. I was incredibly
impressed with how seriously theyve taken the
topic. A lot of them thought dating violence was
a very common experience. This year was the
first the D.E.L.T.A. Project, a program of the
Lakeshore Alliance Against Domestic and Sexual
Violence, worked with Upward Bound students,
Coghill said. The D.E.L.T.A. Project has educated
4,700 students about domestic abuse with
in-school programs since 2006, she said.
