A Summary of OT Missiology

• God created the world with a plan to bless
  humanity.
• Every human being bears the imago dei and is
  included in the missio dei. All nations are one
  family
• God desires to call both men and women into
  partnership for the fulfillment of the missio
  dei.
• Our first duty is to obey the mandates of God,
  including the Dominion Mandate and the Great
  Commission.

• Rest and satisfaction are part of the mission.
• Gods purposes are inexorable and no enemy can
  destroy them.
• The Promise of Eves, Abrahams, Judahs Davids,
  and Gods seed, a Kinsman-redeemer for Israel and
  the Nations
• A blood Covenant to bless all peoples will be
  finally made in Christs body.

• Human Diversity is a means of grace and will last
  forever.
• No missionary is worthy or even capable of his
  task, not even Abraham. Salvation is by grace
  through faith.
• God is forming one great universal Kingdom of
  priests in the earth, in which justice and peace
  reign.
• God contextualizes his message and so should we.
  But syncretism that distorts Gods message is
  unacceptable.

• Gods desire is to save, but he will punish also.
  Still, punishment will be used to fulfill his
  saving purposes.
• God will accompany those he sends in mission.
• Obedience is the key to missionary success.
• God will deploy his servants strategically to
  fulfill his mission.
• God will rule from Zion, the New Jerusalem, where
  he will dwell with his people forever.

The Gospel

• With this announcement, the Gospel or euangelion
  or Good News is born. The Good news preached
  by John and Jesus was that the Kingdom of God has

  I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will
  baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

• By coming to baptize in the Spirit, Jesus will

The Heart of Jesus Message

• The theme of Gods arriving Kingdom was the
  heart of Jesus ministry. All of his miracles
  were signs that God was arriving in power to set
  the world right. The healings spoke of
  salvation. The liberation from demons spoke of
  the end of the kingdom of Evil.

• Matthew 92-8
• When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the
  paralytic, "Take heart, son your sins are
  forgiven." 3 At this, some of the teachers of
  the law said to themselves, "This fellow is
  blaspheming!" 4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus
  said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your
  hearts? 5 Which is easier to say, 'Your sins are

The Great Reversal

• All who have known suffering should rejoice in
  the announcement of Gods Kingdom, because all
  injustice will cease.
• As in the OT, justice and the KOG cannot be
  separated.

• Luke 168-9
• 8 "The master commended the dishonest manager
  because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of
  this world are more shrewd in dealing with their
  own kind than are the people of the light. 9 I
  tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for

  welcomed into eternal dwellings.

• Jesus main way of discussing the Kingdom was
  through the use of parables.

• Matt 1324 a man who sowed good seed in his
  field. Wheat and tares!
• Matt 1331 a mustard seed, which a man took and
  planted in his field. Growth!
• Matt 1333 yeast that a woman took and mixed
  into a large amount of flour until it worked all
  through the dough." Influence!

• 35 Jesus went through all the towns and

  them, because they were harassed and helpless,
  like sheep without a shepherd.

  persecution broke out against the church at
  Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were
  scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

• Acts 109-13 Peter went up on the roof to
  pray. . . he fell into a trance. He saw heaven
  opened and something like a large sheet being let
  down to earth by its four corners. It contained
  all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as
  reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then
  a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."
  
• Acts 1115-18 "As I began to speak, the Holy
  Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the
  beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had
  said 'John baptized with water, but you will be
  baptized with the Holy Spirit.' So if God gave
  them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in
  the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I
  could oppose God?" 18 When they heard this, they
  had no further objections and praised God,
  saying, "So then, God has granted even the
  Gentiles repentance unto life."

The Antioch Church

• Acts 131-3
• 131 In the church at Antioch there were
  prophets and teachers Barnabas, Simeon called
  Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been
  brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2
  While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting,
  the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas
  and Saul for the work to which I have called
  them." 3 So after they had fasted and prayed,
  they placed their hands on them and sent them
  off.

Pauls First Missionary Journey

• Acts 1313-14, 44-48
• 13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed
  to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to
  return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on
  to Pisidian Antioch. . . .On the next Sabbath
  almost the whole city gathered to hear the word
  of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds,
  they were filled with jealousy and talked
  abusively against what Paul was saying. 46 Then
  Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly "We had
  to speak the word of God to you first. Since you
  reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy
  of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47
  For this is what the Lord has commanded us "'I
  have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you
  may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"
  48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad
  and honored the word of the Lord and all who
  were appointed for eternal life believed.

• Acts 1513-20
• 13 When they finished, James spoke up "Brothers,
  listen to me. 14 Simon has described to us how
  God at first showed his concern by taking from
  the Gentiles a people for himself. 15 The words
  of the prophets are in agreement with this . . .
  19 "It is my judgment, therefore, that we should
  not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are
  turning to God.

Pauls Second Missionary Journey

• Acts 166-10
• Paul and his companions traveled throughout the
  region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept
  by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the
  province of Asia. 7 When they came to the border
  of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the
  Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. 8 So
  they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. 9
  During the night Paul had a vision of a man of
  Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to
  Macedonia and help us." 10 After Paul had seen
  the vision, we got ready at once to leave for
  Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to
  preach the gospel to them.

• 11 The following night the Lord stood near Paul
  and said, "Take courage! As you have testified
  about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify
  in Rome."

Audience among the Gentiles

• Acts 2821-30
• 21 They replied, "We have not received any
  letters from Judea concerning you, and none of
  the brothers who have come from there has
  reported or said anything bad about you. 22 But
  we want to hear what your views are, for we know
  that people everywhere are talking against this
  sect." 23 They arranged to meet Paul on a certain
  day, and came in even larger numbers to the place
  where he was staying. From morning till evening
  he explained and declared to them the kingdom of
  God and tried to convince them about Jesus from
  the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. 24 Some
  were convinced by what he said, but others would
  not believe.

• 25 They disagreed among themselves and began to
  leave after Paul had made this final statement
  "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your
  forefathers when he said through Isaiah the
  prophet 26 "'Go to this people and say, "You
  will be ever hearing but never understanding you
  will be ever seeing but never perceiving." 27 For
  this people's heart has become calloused they
  hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed
  their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their
  eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their
  hearts and turn, and I would heal them.' 28
  "Therefore I want you to know that God's
  salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they
  will listen!" 30 For two whole years Paul stayed
  there in his own rented house and welcomed all
  who came to see him. 31 Boldly and without
  hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and
  taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.
