Welcome to the Learning Resource Centre (LRC)
Everyone is very welcome to use the LRC. Our
students and staff have borrowing rights and
the public have day time access for reference
purposes. Our stock includes a good selection
of academic material covering many subject areas,
as well as a small stock of fiction,
horticulture, teaching resources and the English
Chess Collection.

How many items can I borrow???

Can I renew items ?
  • YES - You can renew items borrowed from the
    LRC provided
  • you have no overdue items
  • you have no queries relating to your record
  • the item has not been reserved by another
    borrower.

How to renew items
  • You can renew items you currently have out by
  • going on-line at http//library.uch.ac.uk
  • telephoning the LRC on 01273 644640 (remember
    to have your access card number ready to
    quote)
  • by using the library catalogue (OPAC) in the
    LRC
  • coming into the LRC in person.

Fines
  • We charge fines for overdue items
  • Our charges are 50 pence per day for 7 day
    loan items and 1.00 per hour for Desk Loan
    Items.
  • If you have fines outstanding you will not be
    able to borrow additional items until the fines
    are paid in full but you can continue to renew
    existing items that you already have out.

Reservations
  • Using the On-Line Public Access Catalogue
    (OPAC) you can reserve items that are already
    out on loan.
  • You are allowed to have 6 items
  • reserved at any one time.
  • You will receive an email from LRCstaff when an
    item you have reservedis ready for collecting.
    You have 7 days to collect the item from the
    LRC.

Whats new at UCH ?
We have introduced Joint Honours Degrees to UCH
for the first time this academic year. These
courses include Sociology and English Media
Studies and Sociology English Literature and
Media Studies Media Studies and
Education Education and English If you are
interested in any of these courses or any other
course, please ask for a prospectus at the desk.

Inter-Library Loans
  • If we dont have the items you need then why not
    use our Inter Library Loans (ILL) service.
  • Please ask for a form at the desk. There are 2
    types of forms, one for books and one for journal
    articles.
  • Your tutor will need to countersign the form.
  • There is no charge, but
  • students are restricted
  • to 6 ILL requests per term.

Inter-Site Loans
  • We offer a Return Borrow service for all
    University of Brighton students and staff living
    in the area.
  • Request/collect/ return all UoB items here at
    University Centre Hastings.
  • Similar arrangements
  • for Hastings College and Greenwich students.

Gardening collection
  • We have a small section
  • dedicated to horticulture with
  • books on gardening, allotments,
  • flower and vegetable growing.

Your library card
  • Your library card is also an access card and
  • you will need to use it to get into the LRC in
  • the evenings and on Saturdays during term time.
  • Your card will also get you discount at some
  • of the local shops including

  • -- McDonalds
  • -- and others . . . . .

Libraries in Hastingsand St Leonard's

We have a leaflet showing the location of the
locallibraries. These leaflets are distributed
throughout the Learning Resource Centre. Please
help yourself to aleaflet or ask a member of
staff at the desk if you cantlocate these or
any otherinformation that you may require.

Refer

A new Refer Scheme has just started. Refer
allows an adult member of Hastings Public
Library to borrow up to three standard loan
items from the University Centre Hastings. If
you are currently NOT a student nor a member of
staff at UCH then pick-up a leaflet about
Refer and talk to the Public Library about
joining the Scheme.

SCONUL

SCONUL Access is a reciprocal access scheme,
granting borrowing privileges to many types of
library users working or studying at
participating higher education libraries in the
United Kingdom and Ireland. Have a look at the
information around the LRC on SCONUL or check out
their website on www.access.sconul.ac.uk

Facilities for disabled students
There are 2 allocated car-parking spaces for
disabled staff and student use. The car-park
is in Middle Street (behind the building) and
access can be gained via the back door. There
is also parking in Middle Streetincluding
allocated bays for those witha valid Disability
Badge. The LRC has a text magnifier, hearing
loop and a low-level photocopier.

Personal Emergency Egress Plan
  • For your safety whilst in the building,
    disabled or mobility impaired users must
    complete a Personal Emergency Egress Plan
    (PEEP).
  • If you have a long-term or a temporary
    impairment and would have problems
    evacuating the building in an emergency,
    this applies to YOU!!!
  • In the first instance, please ask at the LRC
    desk.

Computer Pool Room 6th Floor
  • The large pool room is open
  • Monday Thursday 9.00 21.00
  • Friday 9.00 19.00
  • Saturday 9.00 16.00

There are 32 workstations all with
internet access and basic Microsoft software.
Theres a colour printer and a black and white
printer too. IT support is available during
most of the opening times including evenings and
Saturdays.

Binding your course work

We can bind your course work and projects for
you for a charge of 1.00 per item. Please ask
at the desk in the LRC for further details.

The National Chess Library
  • We are in the process of cataloguing and
    arranging the National Chess Library which
    includes books, tournament information and
    journals from the collections of
  • Golombek
  • Croker
  • Jordan
  • Clarke
  • Diggle
  • Visitors to these Collections are very
    welcome. Please make an appointment to visit by
    contacting the LRC staff.

Teaching resource boxes
  • These boxes are for
  • students on Teacher
  • Training courses and
  • include topic boxes,
  • books and AV items
  • for taking into schools.

Student Accommodation
  • If you are a student at the
  • University Centre Hastings and want help with
    finding accommodation or have any problems with
    your current landlord we have an Accommodation
    Officer who may be able to assist. Ask at the
    Desk for more information and also see the
    accommodation notice board situated just outside
    the LRC entrance.

  • We now have a small stock of general
  • Careers Guidance Information
  • in the Learning Resource Centre.
  • Please come and see if there is anything
  • of interest to you. The LRC staff are
  • always on hand to provide any additional
  • information or to direct you to a
  • Careers Adviser.

The Learning Resource Centre
Everyone is welcome to come into the LRC to read
the daily and local newspapers, research our
journals or just to browse through our
collection of books on a variety of subjects.

Wireless access
University of Brighton students and staff now
have wireless access in the LRC, the café and
the student lounge area.

Using your laptopfor the first time at UCH

Before using your laptop for the first time in
the LRC please use the virus checker disc
(available from the desk) to ensure your laptop
is virus free. You are also required to have
your laptop checked by one of our Technicians
before you log into the University of Brighton
network.

Group study rooms
  • There are a few open access study rooms in
    the LRC for students to work in groups of 3 or
    more when working on Projects.
  • No need to book these rooms they are available
    on a first come / first served basis.

History Collection
  • We recently received a large
  • donation of books on
  • History and Politics. The collection is all
    loanable
  • to our students and staff.

Whats on locally ???
We have two display stands containing information
on local events. Please help yourself to this
information.

Local attractions
There are many local attractions in and around
Hastings, these include the Castle, Country Park
and Museum.
There are also loads of good pubs, cafes and
clubs.

Local parks
Hastings has much to offer including Alexandra
Park which is just a shortwalk from UCH and is
open during daylight hours. The park has a
boating lake, café,rose garden and much more.
The Hastings Country Park is amassive expanse of
open land whichflows down to the sea. It is
ideal forboth walkers and cyclists.

Photocopiers
  • Students can purchase cards from the LRC if they
    want to use the photocopiers.
  • The 2 card buys 32 x A4 copies and
  • 24 x A3 copies.
  • The 5 card buys 100 x A4 copies and
  • 75 x A3 copies.
  • Two copiers are located in the LRC for student
    use.

Do I have computer access???
  • At UCH youll need a personal Username and
    Password to log-on to the University of Brighton
    network. Please ask at the desk if you have
    any questions re our computer policy thank
    you.

On-Line Library Catalogue
  • The on-line library catalogue is known as the
    OPAC. We have 4 dedicated computers situated in
    the middle of the LRC for student and staff use.
  • If you want to know if we have a particular
    book in stock or search a subject area, you can
    use the OPAC to do the search yourself. If you
    require assistance, please ask a member of the
    LRC staff.
