Issues to Consider7 credits vs. 8 credits
  • Your childs personality
  • Your childs commitments outside of school
  • Your childs course load
  • Your childs ability to manage unstructured time
  • Final choice is an individual and family decision

16
Issues to ConsiderWhich level class is right
for your child?
  • If your child is achieving high grades, is that
true for tests as well as homework and/or extra
    projects?
  • How much time does your child currently spend on
    homework?
  • How much does your child currently stress about
    grades?
  • How busy is their life outside of school?
  • How independent and responsible is your child?
  • Does your child do their homework consistently?
  • Is your childs life balanced?

17
Homework
  • Homework completion is the key to success.
  • Your child should expect more homework in high
school than what he/she had in middle school.

18
What are Learning Centers?
  • Learning Centers are
  • Available for all 5 academic subjects
  • Staffed by our teachers
  • Strictly voluntary for students
  • Open during school hours only

19
Course Pre-Registration Process
  • 1. 8th grade teachers make course recommendations
based on academic performance CMT scores.
  • 2. Counselors will meet with 8th grade students
    to discuss the registration process.
  • 3. A letter will be mailed to parents and
students with a copy of the Staples High School
course recommendations and electives for parent
and student to review and sign. Due back to 8th
grade counselor by Friday, March 7th . Changes
cannot be guaranteed after this date.

20
Waivers/Overrides
  • Parent must first call and discuss course
    recommendation with subject teacher.
  • Parent then calls 8th grade counselor to request
    a waiver/override form.
  • Waive/Override form must completed and returned
    to the 8th grade counselor.
  • Waiver forms that are received by the end of
March will receive first consideration for
available seats in a course. After that date we
will do our best to accommodate your request if
any seats remain. The absolute deadline for a
waiver form to be returned is the end of May.
  • No overrides will be accepted in the fall.
  • CAUTION If a student overrides a course
recommendation and the course is too difficult
they may be unable to change levels during the
    school year.

21
Staples Add/Drop Policy

    course
