The Leverhulme Trust
  • Schemes suitable for post-doctoral and other
    early career researchers
  • Research Fellowships
  • Study Abroad Fellowships
  • Study Abroad Studentships
  • Early Career Fellowships
  • Research Project Grants
  • Philip Leverhulme Prizes

3
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Research Fellowships
  • Closing Date November 2008
  • The main purpose of these awards is to enable
    experienced researchers, particularly those who
are or have been prevented by routine duties, the
opportunity to complete a programme of original
    research. Research Fellowships provide research
expenses over and above normal living costs
and/or provide a contribution towards reasonable
replacement costs or loss of earnings.
  • There are no restrictions on academic
discipline, and awards are not limited to those
    holding appointments in higher education.

4
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Eligibility criteria
  • Applicants must be resident in the UK and be
able to demonstrate experience and academic
background sufficient to confirm their ability to
complete the proposed programme of research.
This means that applicants will normally be aged
    30 or over.
  • Individuals registered for a degree, doctoral
studies or for professional or vocational
    qualifications are ineligible for these
    Fellowships. Equipment or institutional charges
for accommodation or overheads are ineligible
    costs.
  • All fields are eligible.
  • Duration
  • Research Fellowships may be between 3 and 24
    months.
  • Value
  • The maximum value of a Fellowship is 35,000.

5
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Study Abroad Fellowships
  • Closing date November 2008
  • Study Abroad Fellowships support a period
overseas in a stimulating academic environment.
  • They differ from Research Fellowships in that
the awards support a range of activities other
than straight-forward research, for example the
exchange of ideas or the development of new lines
    of research and collaboration.

6
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicants must be resident in the UK and be
aged 30 or over. They should have held an
established full-time post in a UK institution of
higher education, or in a museum, art gallery or
comparable institution for at least five years.
  • Eligible costs include reasonable replacement
cover whilst the applicant is overseas travel to
and within the overseas country or countries a
stipend to meet the increased expense of living
overseas and essential research costs. Anyone
registered for a degree, for doctoral studies or
for professional or vocational qualifications is
    ineligible. Equipment or institutional charges
for accommodation or overheads are ineligible
    costs.
  • All fields are eligible.
  • Value
  • The maximum value of a Fellowship is 21,000
  • Duration
  • Between 3 and 12 months.

7
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Study Abroad Studentships
  • Closing date 8 January 2008
  • These awards support an extended period of
advanced study or research at a centre of
learning in any overseas country, with the
    exception of the USA.
  • Applicants should be under age 30 or, if older,
make a strong case for special consideration.
They should be able to demonstrate how their work
would benefit from being conducted overseas,
rather than in the UK. Those wishing only to
improve their foreign language skills are not
    eligible for this scheme.

8
The Leverhulme Trust Duration The
Studentships are tenable for between 12 and 24
months. Eligibility criteria and Value The
Studentship comprises a basic annual maintenance
allowance of 15,000 a partner allowance of
5,000 if a student is accompanied by a
dependent partner, a return air fare and a
baggage allowance. Further allowances are
payable at the Trusts discretion, e.g.
assistance with overseas tuition fees and
essential research costs. Applicants must have
been resident in the UK for at least five years
at the time of application, and must hold an
undergraduate degree from a UK institution
undergraduates are not eligible for these
awards.
9
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Early Career Fellowships
  • Closing date March 2008
  • These awards are intended to provide career
development opportunities for researchers with a
proven record of research. Applicants should
NOT, however, have yet held a full-time
established academic post in a UK university or
comparable UK institution, nor may Fellows hold
such a post concurrently with the Early Career
    Fellowship.
  • These awards are intended to assist those at a
relatively early stage of their academic careers,
and it is hoped that the appointment will lead to
a more permanent position, either within the same
    or another institution.

10
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Eligibility criteria
  • Applicants must normally be under 35 years of
age at the time of taking up the
award.applicants aged 35 and over may apply if a
strong and well-reasoned case can be made.
  • Applicants must hold an awarded Doctorate or
have equivalent research experience at the time
of taking up the Fellowship. Those registered
for a Doctorate may apply only if they have
submitted their Doctoral thesis by the closing
date, and confirmation of this will be required
as part of the application procedure.
  • Applicants must either hold a first degree (or
an equivalent qualification) from a UK higher
education institution or be or have recently been
a member of the UK academic community and intend
    to remain so.
  • All fields are eligible. However, those in
Social Policy which are primarily concerned with
the implementation of policy are unlikely to be
    funded.

11
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Institutional Commitments
  • The Scheme is based on a pattern of joint
support whereby the Leverhulme Trust will
contribute 50 of the Fellows total salary costs
    (including National Insurance, superannuation and
London Allowance, where applicable) up to a
maximum of 22,000 per year of the Fellowship.
The balance is to be contributed by the host
    institution.
  • Amount of Award
  • Award holders will be paid at a point on the
national salary scale for academic staff, based
on the individuals age and experience.
  • In recognition of the prestige of these awards
and to enable the Fellows research, up to 5,000
p.a. will be available to each Fellow for
research expenses (but not for capital items of
    equipment or books).
  • Please note the Trust cannot assist applicants in
    finding a suitable host institution.

12
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Teaching commitments
  • Whilst it is desirable for the Early Career
Fellow to gain some teaching experience, teaching
should average no more than 3 hours per teaching
week in term time. The Trust expects that the
subjects taught will relate to the main thrust of
the Fellows research interests and not simply to
    the Departments needs.
  • The total time spent on teaching duties (i.e
    preparation, teaching, examining, marking and
administration) should not exceed one day per
    teaching week in term time.
  • Place of tenure
  • The appointments will be tenable in any UK
university or institution of higher education in
    the UK.
  • Duration
  • These Fellowships are tenable for 24 months on a
full-time basis and are not renewable.

13
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Research Project Grants
  • These awards form the great majority of grants
given by the Trust, and are made by a Principal
Applicant who wishes to pursue a project of high
quality and originality which is his or her own
    vision.
  • They provide support for innovative and original
research projects in any discipline except
    medicine.
  • The grant pays for the salaries of research
    staff (usually post-doctoral researchers) engaged
on the project, and some modest research costs.
  • The choice of theme and design of the project
lies entirely with the Principal Applicant.

14
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Eligibility criteria
  • The great majority of awards are made for
projects costing up to 250,000 over a duration
of two to three years. At least 75 of the
resources requested must be used to provide
funding for research staff (research assistants,
postgraduate students) who work specifically on
    the project.
  • The tuition fees and maintenance costs of a PhD
studentship may be included provided they are set
at the base rate for Research Council awards for
UK students and must be directly related to the
    project in hand.
  • Associated research costs up to a maximum of 25
of the total budget can be included.
  • Awards are not made to cover the salary costs of
the Principal Applicant, or those of the
    co-applicants.
  • Eligible institutions are universities, other
institutions of higher and further education in
the UK, and registered charities in the UK.

15
The Leverhulme Trust
  • These awards differ from the Fellowships and
Studentships offered by the Trust, in that they
are submitted by the Principal Applicant via a
    two-stage process Outline and Detailed.
  • There are no deadlines for Outline applications.
The three deadlines each year for successful
    Outlines are
  • 1 December, 1 September and 21 March.

16
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Philip Leverhulme Prizes
  • Closing date May 2008
  • These prizes are awarded to outstanding scholars
(normally under the age of 36) who have made a
substantial and recognised contribution to their
particular field of study, recognised at an
    international level and whose future
contributions are held to be of correspondingly
    high promise.
  • Approximately 25 prizes are available each year
across the five topics offered. For 2008, the
    selected disciplines are
  • Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences History
of Art Medieval, Early Modern and Modern
History Mathematics and Statistics and Zoology.

17
The Leverhulme Trust
  • Value and Duration
  • Each prize has a value of 70,000 and is
available over a two year period.
  • Prizes can be used for any purpose which can
advance the Prizeholders research, with the
    exception of enhancing their salary.
  • Nominees
  • Nominees must hold a post (irrespective of the
source of funding) in a UK institution of higher
    education or research.
