Title: Phi Theta Kappa And Benefits for community colleges

Phi Theta Kappa AndBenefits for community
colleges
2
  • Phi Theta Kappa can be a strong asset to a
community college campus. Phi Theta Kappa not
only provides a respected avenue for academic
recognition, but also engages students in
    leadership development, honors education and
    community service.
  • Dr. George Boggs, PresidentAmerican Association
of Community CollegesMember, Phi Theta Kappa
    Board of Directors

Studies indicate that engaged students are more
likely to succeed in their education and chosen
career. A local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa
provides that opportunity. I tell new student
inductees each year that involvement in Phi Theta
Kappa is not only a recognition of academic
excellence but it also serves to develop the
person as a whole. This is what future employers
are looking for in our highly competitive global
environment. Dr. Keith Miller, President Black
Hawk College Chairman Elect, AACC Board of
Directors

What is Phi Theta Kappa?
  • Official Honor Society of the Two-Year College
  • Largest Honor Society in Higher Education
  • Student Centered Organization
  • Eligibility
  • Four Hallmarks

Recent national Community College Survey of
Student Engagement results indicated that some 85
percent of community college students have zero
engagement with their institutions outside of the
classroom.  A perfect antidote to such pervasive
lack of involvement is Phi Theta Kappa, an
organization that focuses on the development of
the whole student in the particular areas of
scholarship, leadership, service, and
fellowship.   It has been my experience over 40
years at eight colleges, including six as a
CEO, that a strong, viable, active Phi Theta
Kappa chapter contributes significantly to the
strength and viability of the institution. Dr.
Larry W. Tyree, Interim President Independence
Community College, Kansas

Mission Statement
  • "The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to
    recognize and encourage scholarship among
two-year college students. To achieve this
purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide
opportunity for the development of leadership and
service, for an intellectual climate for exchange
of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for
scholars, and for stimulation of interest in
    continuing academic excellence."

How Does Phi Theta Kappa Benefit Students?
  • 36 Million in Transfer Scholarships
  • Recognition
  • Networking Opportunities
  • Leadership Experience
  • Recommendations
  • Transfer and Career Tools

Phi Theta Kappas Leadership Development Program
was what set apart my undergraduate career it
made my education distinct from what I would have
received at any college or university that does
not offer it and it taught me how to excel in
the world.
Wes Moore Phi Theta Kappa
member Ph.D. candidate, Rhodes Scholar at Oxford,
former White House intern

How Can Phi Theta Kappa Benefit Faculty?
  • 5,000 Mosal Award for Professional Development
  • Faculty Scholars
  • Leadership Experience

Serving as a Phi Theta Kappa advisor has been
the high point of my professional career of over
35 years.  I love teaching, but working with
students in the classroom doesn't compare with
helping to facilitate their growth as they pursue
excellence through the four hallmarks of Phi
Theta Kappa."   Roger Ekins, Advisor Butte
College, California Mosal Scholar

How Can Phi Theta Kappa Benefit Colleges?
  • Increase Student Retention
  • Increase College Visibility in the Community
  • Provide Higher Degree of Student Involvement
  • Encourage Student Development
  • Improve Student Transfer Opportunities

The academic prowess of Phi Theta Kappa members
makes these students some of the most sought
after by Columbia University School of General
Studies.  Not only do we recognize their success
through the admissions process, but also through
a financial investment in their academic
career. Curtis Rodgers, Dean of Admissions
Enrollment Communications Management Columbia
University School of General Studies

What Does My Chapter Need?
  • Letter of Invitation from College President
  • Administrative Presence at Induction Ceremony
  • Ongoing Funding and Support
  • Resources to Attend Regional and
  • International Events

Attending the International Convention, I feel,
is vital to our chapter success. These
conferences not only add to the individual
members experience, but also help the chapter
learn about the various opportunities and
programs Phi Theta Kappa has to offer. Steven
Schwarz, Advisor Raritan Valley Community
College, New Jersey

Benefits for College Administration
  • Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction
  • Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Administrator Award of Distinction

The chapters of Phi Theta Kappa at the three
campuses of Copiah-Lincoln Community College
reach out to the student body to offer great
incentives for scholastic excellence and also to
offer opportunities for service to fellow
students and to the college community.  In short,
Phi Theta Kappa plays a major role in
accomplishing that portion of the college mission
which addresses quality of life for students.
As a past recipient of the Shirley B. Gordon
Award of Distinction, I am so honored to have
been a partner with Phi Theta Kappa during my
tenure as President of Copiah-Lincoln.  To have
been recognized with this distinguished award for
supporting such an outstanding organization is
certainly a highlight of my career in higher
education! Dr. Howell C. Garner,
