Title: TIME TO SHAPE UP

1
GEOMETRY
  • TIME TO SHAPE UP
  • Third Grade Guide

2
OBJECTIVES
  • Build geometric figures with other common shapes
  • Name concrete objects and pictures of
    three-dimensional solids
  • Describe relationships between two-dimensional
    and three-dimensional objects
  • Recognize similar shapes
  • Identify a line of symmetry in a two-dimensional
    shape
  • Recognize same shape in different positions
Identify points in the first quadrant of a grid
    using ordered pairs
  • Determine perimeter using a rectangular array
  • Represent area using a rectangular array

3
VOCABULARY YOU SHOULD KNOW!
4
SHAPES WHAT ARE THEY?
  • Square  A 4 sided shape that has four right
    angles and four equal sides.
  • Rectangle A 4 sided shape that has four right
angles and parallel sides are equal.
  • Triangle A polygon with three sides.
  • Circle The set of all points in a plane that are
the same distance, called the radius, from a
    given point, called the center.

Build geometric figures with other common shapes
  • To make different shapes you can use triangles,
square and parallelograms to make different and
    better objects is called TANGRAMS
  • A fun way to see how to make some fantastic
figures with basic shapes Tangram Activity

SHAPES
in 3-D
  • Two Dimensional shape that has height and width
    (flat on paper)
  • Three Dimensional object that has height, width
and depth (something you can hold)
  • Construct 3-D objects
  • Guess the 3-D objects

7
2 Dimensional Vs. 3 Dimensional
  • flat
  • sides
  • angles
  • Compare 2-D shapes
  • find the ATTRIBUTES
  • able to hold
  • sides
  • angles
  • faces
  • edges
  • vertices
  • base

WHICH ONE IS BETTER??
8
TURN, ROTATE, SLIDEMAKE UP YOUR MIND!
Slide moves from left to right
Flip movement of a figure to a new position by
flipping the figure over
Rotation - A movement of a figure by turning it
around a fixed point.
9
Symmetry
When one half of a figure looks like the mirror
image of the other half.
