PROBLEM / ISSUES PROGRAMMATIC
IMPACT ACTION
R
- Codes 400 and 500 are discussing ways to contain
this problem - Expedite thermal performance evaluation of
optical system - Conduct overall ICESat development and personnel
assessment. - Develop revised mission schedule
- Latest GLAS completion schedule causes impact to
LRD.
- GLAS component rework cycles continue to erode
GLAS integration and test schedule longer GLAS
integration effort needed - GLAS CPT only partially completed. Some problems
under investigation. Instrument scientists
struggling to interpret the data.
- CURRENT STATUS
- Working hard to preserve October-December 2002
LRD. - Developed new GLAS IT schedule that includes
laser rework and early EMI test resulting in
minimal schedule impact. Aggressively working
all IT issues. Optimizing remaining mission
schedule.
5 GLAS IT PROBLEMS IN
WORK LASERS STATUS AS OF 1/31/02
DATE ESTAB COMPL 11/29
2/15 1/28 3/15
PROBLEM/ISSUES PROGRAMMATIC
IMPACT ACTION
R
Laser S/N 001 failed during instrument
integration operations
- Loss of 1/3 of instrument lifetime.
- Initial estimate is 2-3 month impact to GLAS
integration and delivery schedule
Replace amplifier stage. Replace electronics
board in all 3 lasers
- CURRENT STATUS
- Fault traced to a failed amplifier diode array
assembly, amplifier module replaced. - Subsequent capacitor failure during vibration
test revealed deficient design of electronics
board. Design modification options in
development. - Decision made to replace existing board in each
laser with new boards.
6 GLAS IT PROBLEMS IN
WORK OPTICAL PATH STATUS AS OF 1/31/02
DATE ESTAB COMPL 11/30 2/28
PROBLEM/ISSUES PROGRAMMATIC
IMPACT ACTION
R
GLAS bore sight stability does not meet mission
performance requirements
Fundamental measurements may be compromised if
behavior persists on orbit.
- Hold mini-peer review on calibration results
- Get AETD and systems involvement in development
of troubleshooting plan.
- CURRENT STATUS
- Peer Review held
- Retest conducted preliminary results look
favorable with major errors traceable to set-up
issues. Detailed data analysis results look
promising. - Additional analysis initiated on the telescope
assembly. - Test plan defined.
7 GLAS IT PROBLEMS IN
WORK LIDAR OPERATION STATUS AS OF 1/31/02
DATE ESTAB COMPL 12/17 2/15
PROBLEM/ISSUES PROGRAMMATIC
IMPACT ACTION
Y
Intermittent energy monitor on green laser
Potential compromise on Etalon operation and data
reduction
- Investigate root cause
- Investigate alternate means for Etalon operation
and data reduction
- CURRENT STATUS
- Several troubleshooting tests conducted,
inconclusive results. - Alternate Etalon operation algorithms in
development. - Problem understood and board modification
solution verified on the engineering model board.
Alternative (baseline) software approaches being
investigated and validated.

ICESat, CATSAT, DPAF, and launch vehicle. Both
ICESat and CATSAT meet the 8m2 guideline by
significant margins. ICESat is 3.9m2 and CATSAT
0.9m2. ICESat will reenter in 15 years, which is
well under the 25 year guideline. Disposal
