1
The States of Matter
  • By Megan Rohloff

2
Matter
  • Matter is composed of everything around us on
earth. It can retain many different shapes and it
    has many different properties.

3
There are four main states of matter in science.
  • Solid
  • Liquid
  • Gas
  • Plasma

4
Solids
  • A solid is a substance that has
  • A definite shape
  • A definite volume
  • The atoms/particles inside of the solid are very
compact/ tightly held together and can barely
    move.

5
Liquids
  • A liquid is a substance that
  • Does not have a definite shape
  • Does have definite volume
  • The atoms/ particles inside the liquid are not as
tightly held together and are able to slightly
    move.

6
Gases
  • A gas is a substance that
  • Does not have a definite shape or volume.
  • The atoms/ particles are not tightly held
together and are spread out everywhere in the
    atmosphere.
  • They are not visible to the naked eye.

7
Particle Density
8
Plasma
  • Plasma is a substance that
  • Is much like a liquid but is composed of free
Electrons and ions of the element.
  • You dont find very often in the environment.

9
Now There is going to be a short quiz testing
your knowledge on what you have just learned.
  • Take out a piece of paper and write down the
correct letter that matches up with each
question.Precede to the following slide to take
    the quiz.

10
Do You Know What the States of Matter are?
  • This state of matter has a definite shape and
volume and the particles are tightly packed
    together.
  • This state of matter has no definite shape or
volume and its particles are spread out
    everywhere.
  • This state of matter has a definite volume, but
    no definite shape.
  • This state of matter is not easy to find in the
environment and has a composition much like
    liquid.
  • A. Gas
  • B. Plasma
  • C. Solid
  • D. Liquid

11
Water is good example of how the states of matter
can change just by increasing or decreasing the
temperature at which it is at.
Did You Know ?
12
Water in its many states.
  • Water when put at Zero degrees Celsius or below
forms into ice the solid state of matter.
  • Water when kept at room temperature is in the
    liquid state of matter.
  • Water when at One Hundred degrees Celsius is
formed into water vapor and is in the gaseous
    state of mater.

13
How temperature changes the States of Matter.
  • Melting
  • Condensation
  • Freezing
  • Evaporation
  • Melting is when a solid turns into a liquid.
  • Condensation is when a gas turns into a liquid.
  • Freezing is when a liquid turns into a solid
  • Evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas.

14
Now you should know how to tell the difference
between the different states of matter.
  • The different states of matters particles are
    composed very differently.
  • They all have different volumes and shapes and
    densities.
  • And they can change from one state to another
just by changing the temperature at which they
    are at.
