Title: Program Update from NASA HQ

1
Program Update from NASA HQ
  • Ramesh Kakar
  • Weather Focus Area Leader
  • Program Scientist for TRMM, Aqua and GPM
  • July 14, 2008

2
Program Update
  • For a 6 year old satellite Aqua is in good shape
  • Dr. Ed Weiler has replaced Dr. Alan Stern as the
    AA for SMD
  • Mr. Mike Luther promoted to Deputy AA programs
  • Get ready for End of Prime Mission Review
  • We need to work with JAXA partners to participate
    in the GCOM AO
  • We need to integrate the diverse AMSR-E
    algorithms
  • Aqua-wide workshop in June 2009?

3
Instrument Status
  • AIRS Nominal Operations All voltages, currents,
    and temperatures as expected
  • Another episode of AMSU-A1-2 noisy bus current
being higher than usual near the south pole began
in early May, peaked on May 23, and has (at least
temporarily) stopped. We had relatively large
episodes in 2005 and 2006. The 2007 event was
only about half as strong. This 2008 event, if it
is truly over, had a peak only about one-third as
high as the 2005 and 2006 peaks. It also had a
    much shorter duration.
  • AMSU-A Except for channel 4, AMSU-A is also
healthy, with all voltages, currents, and
    temperatures as expected.
  • An updated Version 5 Level 2 PGE that does not
use channel 4 data, but does use all healthy
AMSU-A channels, was declared operational at the
    GES DISC on March 5.
  • AMSR-E - ADE Motor Current Torque Increasing
  • Threshold changed to 4.5 Nm on 07/17/07 - FOT/IOT
    closely monitoring performance
  • Preparing for July 16th Meeting with JAXA Team on
S/C Fault Management response to AMSR-E momentum
    imbalance
  • CERES - FM4 instrument shortwave anomaly
  • No impact to science data products
  • HSB OFF (Survival Mode)
  • MODIS Nominal Operations.
  • Next MODIS Lunar calibration planned for July
    13th

AMSR-E Anomaly(Summary)
  • April 2007 Noticeable increase in both the ADE
motor current and torque and ADA temperature was
    observed.
  • May 2007 Series of Teleconferences with JAXA
    IOT
  • 6/26/07 Changed Motor Torque Limit from 2.2 Nm
    to 3.5 Nm
  • 7/17/07 Changed the threshold to 4.5 Nm
  • 8/14-16/07 AMSR-E MOWG in Montana
  • Reviewed Contingency Procedures for a sudden
    failure and/or planned shut-down
  • 8/28/07 FOT/MD/SIFM teleconference with JAXA
    IOT
  • April 17, 2008 Spike in Motor Torque (see plot)
  • April 24, 2008 FOT/MD/SIFM TIM
  • Reviewed Red-Limit and Contingency responses
  • Arranging for teleconference with JAXA/IOT (DT
    TBD)
  • Continuing to prepare for July meeting with
    AMSR-E Team

6
ADE Motor Current Torque(Life of Mission
thru 06/04/08)
QuikSCAT experienced similar behavior with its
scatterometer antenna bearing assembly MD
obtained copy of the JPL anomaly investigation
report concluded normal wear tear

Aqua End of Prime Mission Review
  • Is a technical and scientific assessment by an
independent panel of how well the mission met its
    original science objectives
  • Documentation of performance and lessons learned
  • It is an internal SMD/ESD review and not a PM
    procedural reqmt
  • A top level summary of schedule and cost
    performance
  • Review will be co-chaired by ESD Flight and
    Research Program Directors
  • This is a one-time occurrence and documents
mission success and achievement whereas the
Senior Review is a proposal followed by
    programmatic evaluation for future operation

Summary
  • For a 6 year old satellite Aqua is in good shape
  • Get ready for End of Prime Mission Review
  • How do we participate in the GCOM AO?
  • We need to perform more like a team
  • Aqua-wide workshop in June 2009?
