2Windows Explorer
- Windows Explorer is an Application included with
Windows 98 that allows you to view the contents
of the computer, the hierarchy of folders, and
files and folders in each folder. - It also allows you to organize the files and
folders by copying, moving and deleting files and
folders.

5The Exploring Window
- The menu bar contains commands to organize and
work with the drives and files on the computer. - The main window contains two panes- the folders
pane on the left and the contents pane on the
right (you can change their size by dragging the
bar that separates them). - In the folders pane, folders are displayed in
hierarchical structure, were in the top level is
the desktop, connected by a dotted vertical line
to its successor folders. - Clicking the recessed Folders button will remove
the folders pane from the window. - The plus () and minus (-) signs indicate whether
or not the folder contains subfolders, and
whether they are visible or not. It is also used
to expand and collapse folders
6- If neither a plus or minus sign is displayed, the
folder does not contain subfolders. - The contents pane (one the right) displays the
contents of the folder that is highlighted in the
folders pane (one the left). - The status bar at the bottom of the window
displays the number of folders, or objects that
are displayed in the contents pane, and the space
they occupy.

8Copying Files
Insert a formatted floppy into the floppy drive
and then click on the 3½ Floppy (A ) folder
name.
9Creating a New Folder
Right-click the right pane and then point to New
on the shortcut menu.

Point and click Folder on the New submenu.

Type My Files and then press ENTER.
12Copying Files
- You will copy three files from the Windows folder
on drive C to the My Files folder on drive A. The
files to be copied (source) will be selected in
the right pane and right-dragged to the My Files
(destination) folder in the left pane. Prior to
selecting and right-dragging the files, the
destination folder must be visible in the folders
pane, and the three files to be copied must be
visible in the contents pane.
13click the plus sign to the left of the 3 ½
Floppy (A), to display the My Files subfolder in
the folders pane.
14Displaying Source Files
click the plus sign to the left of the Hard disk
(C), and then point to the Windows folder.
15click the Windows folder to display the contents
of the Windows folder. Then scroll through the
contents pane.
16Right click the mouse to open a shortcut menu.
Then point to View and click the List command, to
display the contents of the Windows folder as a
sorted list.

18Selecting a Group of Files
Click on the first file in the group, then select
the other files by holding down the CTRL key and
clicking the file names or icons of the other
files in the group.
19Dragging the files
Point to any of the highlighted files, click the
left mouse button and drag the files to the My
Files folder in the left pane.
20A shortcut menu is displayed.

22Displaying the contents of the My Files folder
Point and click the My Files folder name in the
folders pane.
23Renaming a File or Folder
Click on the file name of the file you want to
rename twice (do not double click the file name).
Then type the new file name and press ENTER.
24Deleting A File or Folder
Right-click the file name you want to delete,
then click the Delete command in the shortcut
menu, and then press Yes to confirm.
