2
Why is PSHE education so important?
  • PSHE education is an important area of the
curriculum that helps children and young people
grow and develop as individuals and as members of
families and communities. PSHE education makes a
significant contribution to the five outcomes
    within Every Child Matters.
  • The National PSHE Continuing Professional
Development (CPD) programme has been running for
six years and around 8,000 teachers and community
    nurses have undertaken the programme.

3
In Surrey.
  • Over the last 4 years 56 Teachers and 17
Community Nurses have completed the PSHE CPD
    programme in Surrey

4
Who is the programme for?
  • The National PSHE CPD programme is designed
primarily for teachers and community nurses who
are actively engaged in the delivery of a planned
programme of PSHE education in schools and other
    settings.
  • New for phase 6 other professionals who have
significant experience of teaching or supporting
the teaching of PSHE education including SRE
across a range of years and phases can take part
    in the programme.

5
Aims of the programme
  • improve the competence and confidence of those
    delivering PSHE education
  • raise the quality of teaching and learning in
PSHE education to improve the knowledge,
understanding and skills of children and young
    people
  • effect positive change in PSHE education
    curriculum planning, leadership, delivery and
development within schools and other settings
  • provide accredited recognition for individuals
knowledge, experience and skills related to
teaching, learning and practice within PSHE
    education
  • contribute to wider Government initiatives, in
particular the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy (1999
    2006), Drug Strategy (1999 2002) and Every
    Child Matters (2003).

6
What is involved?
  • Participants follow a 12 month process during
which they compile a portfolio evidencing their
PSHE education practice and attend a series of
    local CPD events.
  • Formative assessment is given at an interim stage.

7
National Standards
  • The portfolio evidences how a participant meets
nationally agreed quality standards relating to
  • Dimension A

    education practice
  • Dimension B

    in the teaching of either

9
What the participants have said
  • Students now love PSHE lessons!
  • It allowed me to feed into whole school pastoral
    issues
  • It created opportunities to develop new
    initiatives
  • Staff feel more supported now in their own
    delivery of PSHE
  • Head and other SMT members did the lesson
observations and enjoyed them - they understand
much more about what PSHE should be like in our
    school

10
What the participants have said (2)
  • It has given me the confidence to do things in
school that, 12 months ago I would never have
    done.
  • I am asking for more time to talk to staff and
    lead inset now.
  • It has shown me what is needed for good quality
PSHE lessons and has given me the confidence to
    deliver that.
