Title: Evidence based practitioners ANOVA

1
Evidence -based practitioners ANOVA
  • Lecture 7, OT 667

2
What is evidence-based practice?
  • An approach to decision-making in which the
clinician uses the best evidence available
combined with clinical expertise in consultation
with the patient to decide upon the clinical
options which suit the patient best

3
Factors to consider when making clinical decisions
  • Patient Expectations
  • Environment
  • Past Experience
  • Evidence
  • Ethics

4
Patient Expectations
  • Result of client/patient beliefs, values, life
    experiences, educational background, family hopes
  • Location of patient in their health experience
    (new injury, chronic condition, life-threatening
    condition)
  • Culture of the community
  • Patient experience of the health care system

5
Environment
  • Social environment
  • patient-therapist interaction
  • family involvement
  • support of professionals/community in which the
    patient/client functions
  • Physical environment
  • where the treatment takes place
  • where the patient/client lives and functions on a
    day to day basis
  • equipment available to the clinician

6
Experience
  • Length of time on the job
  • Clinical community (where you practice)
  • Continuing education

7
Ethics
  • Professional codes
  • Facility mission
  • Personal beliefs/values
  • Life realities

8
Evidence
9
How will you judge the effects of your clinical
decisions?
  • client report
  • use of tests
  • judgement of other professionals (physicians,
    other therapists)
  • compare results against other patients with
    similar diagnoses

10
How will you grow as a clinician in order to be
able to judge change? Learn new skills?
11
Growth Opportunities
  • Advanced training (specialty courses)
  • Conferences (local, regional, national)
  • Involvement in local OT organizations

12
Evidence-based Review for Professional Growth
  • objective assessment of outcomes as a result of
    systematic study
  • introduction of new assessments and techniques
  • introduces new trends in theory and policy, which
    affect patient care
  • challenges modes of thinking

13
Being Open to Evidence
  • How do you feel when beliefs you hold strongly
    are challenged?
  • How do those feelings affect your subsequent
    behavior?

14
Analysis of Variance
15
What is analysis of variance? (ANOVA)
  • A statistical procedure for comparing three or
more conditions or groups to see if the
difference among a set of means are greater than
would be expected by chance alone. Results are
based on the F statistic, a ratio of between
groups effects to within group variability.

16
Different Forms of ANOVA
  • One-way ANOVA
  • Repeated measures ANOVA
  • Two and three -way ANOVA (factorial designs)
  • Mixed designs, where one factor is repeated but
another is held constant (factorial designs)
