rise PANAJI The incidence of breast cancer in
Goa is very high, largely on account of urban
lifestyle associated with high affluence and late
marriages, said cancer surgeon Shekhar Salkar.
Addressing a breast cancer awareness programme
organised by Rotary Club of Panaji, Dr. Shekhar
Salkar, also Secretary General of National
Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE),
India, stated that though a detailed study was
needed to substantiate these facts and reasons,
it has been seen that as against around 90,000
cases reported annually across the country, Goa
with a female population of around six lakhs
reported around 250 cases a year.

any kind. - I couldnt be bothered..Im way too young to
worry about cancer.

- 1 in 22 Indian women is likely to develop
- breast cancer during her lifetime
- Urban women more likely than their rural
counterparts
5Who is at risk?
- Prolonged contraceptive or HRT users
- Alcohol use
- Overweight or obese
- Decreased physical activity
- High fat diet
- Any female!
- Over age 40
- Family history of breast cancer
- Early age at menarche or late age at menopause
- 30 or older at first child birth

- Early detection decreases death rates from breast
cancer by 90

- Start in your 20s.
- Report any breast change to your doctor

- Last days of menstrual flow
- Not menstruating?
- Any day of the month on the same day each
month - Nursing mothers
- Just after feeding the baby or expressing milk
from the breast

- Use the circular, line, or wedge pattern in
examining your breasts - Use the pads of your fingers when examining your
breasts

Get to know the feel of your Breasts Look for
breast changes that persist
- Lump
- Retraction
- Tenderness
- Thickening
- Dimpling
- Skin irritation
- Nipple discharge
- Swelling
- Distortion
- Pain

- Remember
- Most breast lumps or thickenings are not cancer -
but every change should be evaluated promptly!!
15Clinical Breast Examination
- Examination by a Doctor
- Also, ask your doctor to show you how to do SBE
- A small percentage of breast cancers not detected
by mammography may be picked up by CBE - Preferable to get CBE and Mammography done in the
same month

- Mammography can detect 80-90 percent of tumors up
to two years before they can be felt
17 Mammography
- A mammogram is usually performed with the patient
standing - The breast tissue is compressed and x-rays are
taken from different angles
18Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines
- Monthly SBE for all women above 20yrs
- Age 20
- CBE every 3 years
- Age 35
- Annual CBE and a baseline mammogram
- Age 40
- Annual CBE and mammograms
