Reactions to, and Advice for, Maya
Becoming a Librarian!
2-
- When I first announced that I would be
pursuing a career as a librarian, I got a variety
of responses from people in my life.
3- My lovely, supportive brother warned that I
couldnt be a librarian because I am.
4TOO LOUD!
5My parents were happy that I was further pursuing
my education
-
- Apparently, my first cap n gown event wasnt
enough for them. Parents you just cant please
em.
6 My lovely, supportive friends said.
-
- (in surprised, sarcastic tones)
7 That sounds
EXCITING
Maya!
8My very significant other was worried that hed
never see me anymorehe said,
9- Honey, youre going to be a very busy bee
10- Most supportive, and least surprised were my
friends and colleagues who are librarians. - They offered words of encouragement before I
began the program, and continue to be great
sounding boards for my vents about my school work!
11 Corinne, my friend and mentor was
absolutely ecstatic she said,
- Finally, someone is following in my
foot-steps!
12- Last summer I was approached by a
well-meaning patron who asked, Why come you need
a Masters to work here? - She told me she planned to work for the
United Nations. Seriously.
13My colleagues at Koerner library were also very
supportive

- I see it as a really good sign when all the
librarians you know are trying to recruit you
into the profession. - Ive noticed that on the whole, librarians
are very enthusiastic about their jobs.
14- I was more than a little nervous to begin
the program, and solicited advice from some of my
colleagues who are also SLAIS students or recent
graduates.
15- Paula, a December SLAIS graduate, quoted her
former 510 instructor - All will be revealed in the fullness of time.
Lynne Lighthall - Paula also recommends a couple of drinks now
and then
16Kevin, a recent Core Survivor has some good
advice for us all
- Maintain a sense of perspective of the conditions
of both those you are working beside and those
youre trying to serve. - Most library students have other obligations,
like family and work, beyond library school. - The people we are trying to serve are struggling
with technology, ideas, and the library as an
institution. - We need to be patient with one another with the
aim to support colleagues and move citizens to
understanding.
17Hopefully, in the not-so-distant future, we too
will be able to offer advice and support to
incoming SLAIS students
Best of luck to everyone during the program.
Were all in this together!
