- Characteristics of Emerging Business Areas
- Field driven by global mega and technology trends
- Within the Corporate portfolio priorities
- Building upon DSM capabilities (business,
markets, technology) - Potential to generate multiple business
opportunities - Potential for real impact on DSM profile
61. What is "Personalized Nutrition" Definition
- "Personalized nutrition is nutrition/supplements
based on individual dietary recommendations
derived from knowledge of the individuals
lifestyle, nutritional status, and/or unique
genetic makeup and is aimed at promoting health,
well being, performance and potentially reduce
risk of health problems"
- Personalized nutrition can be assessed based on 3
types of tests - SNP tests identify a persons genetic profile
and indicate persons predisposition for certain
health problems - Biomarker tests for self monitoring of
improvements - Questionnaires identify lifestyle, family
history, and nutrition status to develop some
dietary recommendation

8Food With a Purpose By Bernadine Healy 2/13/06
- There's an old medical saying that we dig our
grave with our spoon.
9- Some recent nutrition and health messages towards
the consumer -
- No effect of omega-3 fatty acid on health
- No effect of lowering fat consumption on
cardiovascular health - No effect fruit and vegetables on breast cancer
- No effect of antioxidants on health
- Atkins diet may work but actually we dont know
- Is there really no effect of nutrition on health?
- Or are we doing something wrong here?
10Personalized NutritionSingle Nucleotide
Polymorphism (SNP)
What is a SNP? Single base pair change in the
genomic DNA allele. Position must be shared by
at least 1 frequency of a specific population
- These slight genetic variations between human
beings may predispose some people to chronic
health problems such as CVD, Diabetes etc. - The human genome contains 5-10 Million SNPs.
- SNPs may explain why some respond better to
certain substances and others not. - SNPs are related to biomarkers (indicators) and
biomarkers are related to nutritional health

12Example of personalized nutrition Can be based
on a SNP analysis
- The consumer goes to an optician
- While having the eyes checked, a SNP test for
AMD is performed as well - The test is sent to the lab that analyses whether
the consumer has risk of developing AMD - When the consumer returns to get his
glasses/contacts, the results are returned - In case of predisposition, the consumer is
advised to buy Optisharp (or to take a larger
dosage of Optisharp)
- Optician recommend Optisharp
SNP single nucleotide polymorphism
The product will reduce risk of developing
AMD. If the consumer does not have the
predisposition she might still develop AMD and
could be advised to take Optisharp anyway to
reduce the general risk of getting AMD
13Consumers largely embrace the concept of
personalized nutrition
51 is favorable towards using genetic
information to obtain nutrition/diet related
recommendations (2005 58) 42 is interested in
using genetic information to obtain
nutrition/diet related recommendations (2005
46) There has been some minor erosion in
perceptions, opportunity remains sizeable ?
public attitudes can shift during debate
14Few consumers are yet experienced with genetic
testing to optimize health
Only 3 of the consumers have asked a doctor
about testing for a specific gene or using
genetic information to understand or optimize
health
15DSM and Personalized Nutrition
- SNPs and/or nutrient status are related to
biomarkers and biomarkers are linked to DSMs
nutritional health ingredients - DSM will further develop IP and know-how in this
area in cooperation with third parties - DSM will develop business models with partners in
the value chain to make this a reality this
will offer an option for DSM to become a solution
provider.
