Title: Automated Data Inquiry for Oil Spills ADIOS2

1
Automated Data Inquiry for Oil Spills (ADIOS2)
  • TEAM ADIOS

  • Jeffery F. Lankford, William J. Lehr,
  • Debra Simecek-Beatty, Dave Wesley)

2
What is ADIOS2?
Automated Data Inquiry for Oil Spills (ADIOS2) is
an initial oil spill response tool for emergency
spill responders and contingency planners.

4
Oil Weathering Models
  • Evaporation (less than 5 days)
  • Dispersion (less than 5 days)
  • Dissolution (less than 5 days)
  • Emulsification (Onset can be delayed for days but
    the emulsification process happens rapidly)
  • Sedimentation (5 days or more)
  • Photo-oxidation (weeks)
  • Biodegradation (weeks to months)

5
Spreading in ADIOS2
  • Modification of Fays formula (gravity inertia
    and gravity viscous spreading)
  • Winds and currents
  • Particles are used to simulate changing oil
    volumes
  • Thiessian polygons used to calculate surface area
  • Results in slick with varying thickness and
    surface coverage

6
Evaporation
  • Pseudo-component evaporation model
  • More demanding data requirements than ADIOS1
    (e.g., distillation data)
  • Correlation techniques used for missing data

7
Dispersion
  • Delvignes dispersion model
  • User specified chemical dispersion
  • New sub-model for breaking waves
  • New options regarding fetch specifications

8
Emulsification
  • Water droplet surface area as well as volume
    calculations
  • Includes several options for determining onset of
    emulsification

9
Sedimentation
  • Paynes first order rate law
  • Included in dispersed oil mass balance
    calculations

A) 10,000 g/m3 B) 1000 g/m3 C) 100
g/m3 D) 10 g/m3 E) 1 g/m3
10
Benzene
  • Calculates airborne benzene concentrations at
    downwind edge of slick
  • Correlation techniques for missing data in crude
    oils

11
User Input
12
Wind/Water Input
  • New options for wind direction
  • User input surface current
  • Uncertainty in wind strength

13
Release Input
  • Instantaneous
  • Continuous
  • Contained
  • Leaking tank
