2
Background to the War
3
Background
  • Jan. 29, 2002 - President George Bush lists Iraq
as part of the Axis of Evil
  • Nov. 8, 2002 - The UN Security Council approves
Resolution 1441 which imposes tough new arms
    inspections on Iraq
  • Jan. 28, 2003 - Bush in his State of the Union
Address says that Saddam Hussein is not
cooperating and is ready to attack without the
    support of the UN
  • March 19, 2003 - Bush announces war on Iraq. Bush
    launches Operation Iraqi Freedom

4
Reasons Against the War
5
The World Opinion
  • The preemptive strike on Iraq without strong
international support was not the best avenue
  • Without the world support, the U.S. has lost
    credibility in the world
  • With loss of credibility, we are now stuck
    financially rebuilding Iraq

6
Inspections
  • Iraq was said to have weapons of mass destruction
which fueled the reason for war
  • Inspectors found no such weapons
  • The U.S. could have waited, using war as a later
    option
  • We had other avenues such as
  • Coercive inspections and other methods of
    inspection
  • Strengthening ties and Iraqi forces against
    Saddam Hussein

7
Stopping Al Qaeda
  • The attacks of 9/11, left the U.S. at the tip of
    sword in stopping terrorism
  • Al Qaeda are the greatest threat
  • Attacking Iraq has given no advancement in the
    stopping of Al Qaeda
  • In attacking Iraq, the U.S. has now put resources
into the war rather than stopping Al Qaeda

8
Liberating Iraq
  • The U.S. saw Saddam Hussein as a tyrant and it is
our duty to free Iraq of this tyrant
  • Even though the war has ousted Hussein, Iraq is
    still not liberated fully
  • In the South Shiite Leaders have taken control
  • Shiite leaders are against the U.S. military
  • Iraq still lays divided due to the split feelings
of U.S. involvement in their country

9
The Loss of Life
  • War has shattered the families of thousands both
    home and abroad
  • 4,161 coalition deaths
  • 3,858 of those deaths are Americans
  • A little over 28,300 have been wounded
