Title: VOD vs. SVOD

1
VOD vs. SVOD
  • VOD
  • Unlimited access over a fixed period of time
(usually 24 hours) to a single video, with full
motion control (Start, Stop, FF, RW, Pause).
  • Can be for a group of titles
  • Key is that a one-time fee is charged and access
    is on-demand (i.e., not scheduled)
  • Analogous to a VHS tape or a DVD
  • Digital penetration driver and ancillary revenue
    opportunity for Operators.
  • SVOD
  • Unlimited access to a bucket of content for
monthly recurring charge (may be bundled)
  • Generally tied to a network (HBO on Demand,
Showtime on Demand, Starz on Demand, IFC on
    Demand, Playboy on Demand)
  • Subscription to the base network is generally
    required
  • But not always! (Mag Rack, Sesame Workshop,
Hypnotic Films, literally hundreds of independent
    sources.
  • Brand extension for Programmers for some,
    ancillary revenue opportunity.
  • Ancillary revenue opportunity for Operators

2
Operational Issues for Operators
  • Streaming Contention
  • Related to bandwidth dedicated to VOD/SVOD,
    cable VOD-capable household penetration,
desired maximum simultaneous usage rate and
    compression rate for VOD streams
  • Streaming Example
  • Average Node Size of 2,000 Homes Passed
  • At 70 cable penetration, 1,400 Subscribers
  • At 25 digital penetration, 350 VOD households
  • At 10 maximum simultaneous VOD usage, need 35
VOD streams available at peak usage
  • At 71 compression ratio, need 35/7 56 MHz
    channels
  • Dont let the math worry you!
  • Key more usage more streams
  • more potential contention issues for the
    Operator.

3
Operational Issues for Operators
  • Storage Capacity Server Space
  • Always limited standard servers seem to be 800
    to 1,200 hours
  • Competitors for storage are
  • Hollywood films 125 to 200 hours
  • Library films 30 to 150 hours
  • SVOD 300 to 500 hours
  • Other (Free VOD, Events) 50 to 200 hours

4
Operational Issues for Operators
  • Transport How do I get your content?
  • Most operators use content aggregators
  • TVN
  • N 2 Broadband
  • iN DEMAND
  • Each aggregator requires its own catcher
  • A catcher is simply a dedicated computer
attached to a satellite receiver and programmed
with special software to receive content and in
some cases import it into the Operators Vod
    system.
  • HBO, Showtime and Starz offer their own catchers
  • Operators generally do not pay for catcher
    equipment or services
  • Content is delivered several ways
  • Pre-encoded via satellite to a catcher from a
    network or an aggregator
  • Pre-encoded via DLT (ie, digital tape)
  • Un-encoded via analog tape, beta tape, DLT, or
    DVD
  • Un en-coded content must be encoded most
    Operators cannot do this.
