The Need for CATs(Angelo and Cross, 1993)
  • College faculty typically assume a lot about
their students learning, but most of those
    assumptions remain untested.
  • Feedback from quizzes, exams, and homework often
comes too late to affect student learning.
  • Questioning in class only provides feedback about
    one student at time.

5
Fundamental Assumptions(Angelo and Cross, 1993)
  • To improve their effectiveness, teachers need to
make their objectives explicit, then get
specific, comprehensible feedback on how well
    students are achieving those objectives.
  • To improve their learning, students need to
receive appropriate and focused feedback early
    and often.

6
Using CATs
Keep it Simple!
  • Focus on an objective.
  • Plan the classroom assessment.
  • Teach the lesson.
  • Implement the CAT as part of the lesson.
  • Analyze the students feedback.
  • Interpret the results.
  • Communicate the results to your students, and
    adjust instruction as required.
