Title: Weather Conditions

1
Weather Conditions
  • byTeresa A. Smith
  • 2nd grade Tryon Elementary

2
SCS Objective
  • Competency Goal 2 The learner will build an
understanding of the changes in weather.
  • --2.01 Describe weather by measurable quantities.

3
Essential Question
  • WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CONDITIONS THAT AFFECT
    THE WEATHER?

4
  • People have studied weather for many years. We
have learned a lot about weather and we can
sometimes predict, or guess, what kind of weather
we will have. However, people can not control
the weather and learning about it helps us
    protect ourselves.

5
Rain
  • Rain is a type of precipitation that falls from
    the sky as liquid.
  • Rain stays in the clouds until it becomes heavy
    enough to fall to Earth.

6
Sleet
  • Sleet is small, partially melted pieces of
ice.Sleet is formed when rain falls through a
cold layer of air and freezes before falling to
    the ground.

7
Snow
  • Snow is formed when water vapor freezes around a
    dust particle, making hexagonal crystals.

8
Hail
  • Hail is small bits of ice that have a soft
center.Hailstones can be big or small.

9
Thunderstorms
  • Thunderstorms are common in our area. They are
caused when warm air rises into the atmosphere,
cools, and expands. This movement causes friction
    and electrical charges called lightning.

10
Tornados
  • Tornados are narrow, funnel-shaped clouds that
are made up of violent, twisting winds.Tornados
do a lot of damage as they move along their path.

11
Hurricanes
  • Hurricanes are giant storms that develop over the
ocean. They have winds of 75 miles per hour or
    more.

12
Fog
  • Fog is clouds that are very close to the
earth. We often see fog early in the morning.

13
Dew
  • Dew is water droplets on the ground caused when
the air is full of moisture and it condenses onto
cool surfaces, usually at night. We sometimes
see dew droplets on grass and plants.

14
Clouds
  • Clouds are tiny particles of water hanging high
in the air. There are three main types of
    cloudscumulus, stratus, and cirrus.
