Title: The Power of One
1The Power of One
- Notes to users
- This presentation was originally designed to be
used with groups of Gr. 4/5/6 students with
opportunities for the teacher to ask questions
and students to answer - The statistics on slide 5 will need to be changed
to reflect your board - The first few slides with the milk carton
graphics load very slowly. Give you computer
time to process all those graphic files!

6What can I do to reduce garbage?
Re-usable containers
Recycle
7It adds up to make a difference
No recycling
With re-using and recycling
When everyone participates in the re-use and
recycling program, schools can reduce their
garbage by 60 or more!
8Why is it important to re-use and recycle?
- Garbage takes up a lot of space
- Making new packaging uses a lot of wood, oil,
minerals and other natural resources - Making new packaging uses a
- lot of energy that pollutes the air
9What uses energy at school?
10How can I know that energy is being used?
- Wherever there is a light on, energy is being
used. - For example, the computer monitor is still using
energy if - you can see the screen saver OR
- if there is a light glowing anywhere on the
monitor - Wherever there is heat, energy is being used.
- For example, if an electrical cord has a
converter built in and it is warm to touch then
energy is being used

13What can I do to reduce energy use?
Turn off the lights when you dont need them
(recess, lunch, sunny day)
Turn off the computer monitor when youre done
14Why is it important to conserve energy?
- Wasting energy creates more pollution than is
necessary - Energy costs are increasing
- If we increase the demand for energy we will need
to build more plants to produce more energy.
These energy plants are expensive
15Make a difference!
- Get involved at school
- Learn about the environment
- Show your friends and family what youve learned
- Give thanks and celebrate our Earth!
