ABSTRACT
  • Can students learn material on a portable device
    such as an iPod?
  • Can teachers utilize an iPod to teach?

4
THE PROBLEM
  • Specific skills and knowledge in the Nursing
Skills Lab are taught by repetition and
    demonstration.
  • Faculty is constantly repeating the same
    information over and over!

5
SIGNIFICANCE
  • All students have access to a computer
  • Many have handheld devices
  • Many students are visual learners

6
SOOUR STRATEGY?
  • Videos of the various nursing skills
  • Allow the students to watch anytime
  • Review needed nursing knowledge
  • View the use of equipment to help with the
    technical part of the skill

7
IMPLEMENTATION
  • We made videos of nursing psychomotor skills
  • URLs given to students
  • Converted videos to podcasts
  • Students could view on iPods

8
RESULTS?
  • Could track how many times students accessed the
    URLs (via WebCT)
  • Survey of students Over thirty-five surveys were
sent to students. Received 19 completed surveys.

9
MORE RESULTS
  • 100 of students surveyed stated that the videos
    helped them.
  • 53 stated they could watch the videos where
    they wanted to
  • 74 stated that the videos allowed them to watch
    when they wanted to
  • 79 stated that they could watch the videos
    repetitively

10
HOW STUDENTS WATCHED THE VIDEOS
11
STUDENT STATEMENTS
  • It was great to be able to watch the videos more
    than one time.
  • very professional quality
  • I love the videos for the fact that they
coincide directly with the technique taught here
    at GPC.
  • I really appreciated these videos- they helped
    me tremendously!

12
CONCLUSION
  • Although less than half of our students have
iPods or other video enabled MP3 players, 26
will buy a video device in the next year
  • The majority of students viewed the videos at
    home or at school
  • 100 of students felt that the videos helped them
