Title: Physical Science

1
Physical Science
  • All about Matter

2
What is Matter?
  • Matter is anything that takes up space and has
    mass.
  • You probably use different items that are made of
matter like crayons, pencils, of matter have
different color, size, erasers, and paper.
  • Many kinds shape, and weight.

3
What is Mass?
  • Mass is the measure of how much matter there is
    in an object
  • All matter takes up space and has mass.
  • You yourself take up space and have mass so you
    are made of matter too.

4
States of Matter
  • Matter can be found in different forms.
  • The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and
    gas.
  • A fish tank is a good example of all three
    matters.

5
Solid
  • Solids have a shape of their own.
  • The shape of most solids does not change.
  • Solids are found in many different shapes.

6
Liquid
  • Unlike solids, liquids never have a shape of
    their own.
  • They always have the same shape as their
    container.
  • When you drink milk through a straw, you can see
milk change shape as it moves through the straw.

7
Gas
  • When you are done with all the milk in your
glass, what do you think will fill the glass and
    the straw?
  • Both will be filled with a matter called gas.
  • Like liquids, gases also have the same shape as
    their container.

8
Physical Change
  • Matter can change from one state to another and
    it is called Physical Change.
  • Changes in size and shape are also physical
    changes.
  • In a physical change, you have the same kind of
matter before and after the change.

9
Freezing Point
  • Ice starts to form when water is cooled to zero
degrees Celsius. This temperature is called
    Freezing Point of water.
  • At 0 degrees Celsius, the moving particles in
water slow down to form ice.

10
Boiling Point
  • Water begins to boil at 100 degrees Celsius.
This is the Boiling Point of water.
  • As water boils, its particles move faster and
farther apart. The particles then escape to form
    steam.

11
Chemical Change
  • Some matter can become different matter and this
kind of change is called a Chemical Change.
  • Burning causes wood to change to ashes.
  • Sometimes different matter is formed when two or
more kinds of matter are mixed together.
