• Sears Holdings Corporation, the publicly traded
  (NASDAQ SHLD) parent of Kmart and Sears, Roebuck

• The merger of Kmart and Sears as Sears Holdings
  Corporation closed on March 24, 2005.
  
• Sears Holdings is committed to improving the

DILEMMA

• Sears employs more than 1000 IT professionals who
  were using an array of different system
  development methodologies including SDLC, RAD,
  and versions of UP.
• this resulted in systems having inconsistencies
  in quality and timeliness.
  
• Without a consistent, repeatable methodology, you
  have no way to pass on the process knowledge.

SOLUTION

• To solve this problem, Sears created a single,
  consistent, enterprise-wide development process.
  
  
• This process is backed by software development
  tools licensed from IBM and based on a version of
  the unified process called the Rational Unified
  Process (RUP) methodology.
• RUP was chosen as the standard because teams
  within Sears had obtained success using it on
  isolated projects.

• These tools provide Sears developers the ability
  to manage requirements, development
  documentation, defects and testing results, and
  changes to requirements.

RUP

• RUP is a configurable software development
  process based on the Unified Modeling Language
  (UML) aimed at ensuring the production of
  high-quality software that meets the needs of its
  end users within a predictable schedule and
  budget. The process enhances team productivity
  and delivers software best practices via
  prescriptive guidelines, templates and tool
  mentors for all critical software life cycle
  activities.
