Title: JASON Expedition: Deaf Education Pilot Project SummerFall 2005

1
JASON Expedition Deaf Education Pilot
ProjectSummer/Fall 2005
2
Problem
  • As a group, teachers of students who are
deaf/hard-of-hearing (d/hh) are not prepared to
    teach science.
  • Given the No Child Left Behind legislation and
its requirements for highly qualified teachers,
this lack of science preparation can no longer be
    accepted.
  • As a result, there is a need to enhance the
    science preparation, teaching and instructional
resources of both preservice and existing
teachers of students who are d/hh.

3
Solution
  • The JASON Foundation for Education
(www.jason.org) represents a world wide, world
class resource for the K-12 instruction of
    science.
  • JASON curricular resources, instructional designs
and learning opportunities provide the standards
based, student centered science content that is
largely lacking within K-20 deaf education.
  • Collaborative work is needed to explore how JASON
Foundation resources and K-20 deaf education
science needs can be effectively and efficiently
    combined.

4
Strategy
  • Establish a summer-fall 2005 pilot project to
explore, understand, apply and evaluate the use
of the JASON expedition Mysteries of Earth
Mars to enhance K-20 deaf education.
  • The participants for this pilot project are
    presented on the following pages

Team Members Work
  • Each team will be composed of one deaf education
teacher preparation program faculty member, one
to three Join Together Master Teachers and one
    JASON Teacher.
  • Teams will collaboratively explore, understand
and plan how the current JASON expedition
material can be used to enhance the science
instruction of students who are d/hh and the
science preparation of individuals who are in
preparation to become teachers of students who
    are d/hh.
  • Teams will share and discuss the resulting
insights, plans and evaluation data during
    periodic phone/iVisit conferences.
  • Information drawn from these conferences be used
to design and submit a presentation proposal for
the 2006 National Conference of the Association
    of College Educators Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing
    (ACE-D/HH).
  • Team information will also be used to consider
the possibility of seeking substantial external
funding for the purpose of enhancing science
teaching and learning throughout K-20 deaf
    education.

14
Team Resources
  • Each team member will be
  • provided with a full set of the Mysteries of
    Earth Mars expedition curriculum materials.
  • provided with a Web cam and access to the iVisit
    (www.ivisit.com) video conferencing system.
  • asked to submit a Choice request (i.e., 500)
to both recognize and document their work on this
    pilot project.
  • encouraged to participate, either face-to-face or
    on-line (i.e., video conferencing) in a JASON
    training session on 09/24/05 from 830 a.m. -
500 p.m. EST at Case Western Reserve University.
  • Note Mr. Dwayne Bible/CWRU Tech Spec. (216
368-3246) will collaborate with his KSU
counterpart to establish the on-line training
session option. Team members who would like to
participate in this on-line option must contact
Harold Johnson (330-672-0735) before 09/09/05 to
    make the necessary arrangements.
