3
Mission Statement/Goals
  • Use Technology, hands-on activities, worksheets,
and the text book to teach mathematics.
  • Make math fun and interesting.
  • Relate math to real life
  • Use math to solve problems

4
Course Description
  • The Pre-Algebra course is the first part of
Algebra which includes the language and
applications of algebra, development of the real
    number system, variables, mathematical
expressions, problem solving and basic statistics
    and probability.
  • The Algebra course is a full year course which
includes the language and applications of
algebra, development of the real number system,
    variables, mathematical expressions, linear
    equations, problem solving, inequalities,
    polynomials, special products and factoring,
    graphs, relations and functions, quadratic
equations, and basic statistics and probability.

5
Course Description (continued)
  • The Geometry course will be provided for students
that demonstrate proficiency in Algebra. This
decision will be made in collaboration with
teacher, staff, and administrators. First half of
the year will be an intense review of Algebra
concepts learned last year and finishing up the
last part of the Algebra course which includes
polynomials, factoring, and functions. In the
second half, the Geometry course includes tools
    of geometry-methods of reasoning, construction,
the coordinate plane, and types of measurement.
Then covers properties and application of lines,
    triangles, quadrilaterals, similarity, right
    angle trigonometry, transformations, and circles.
  • These courses are based on the
Mathematics Core Content Standards for New Jersey
    Public Schools.

6
Basic Texts
  • Algebra - University of Chicago School
    Mathematics Project, Prentice Hall 2002
  • Geometry - University of Chicago School
    Mathematics Project, Prentice Hall 2007
  • All students are provided with textbooks for this
    class.

7
Students Expectations
  • 1) Please bring a pencil, pen, notebook/binder,
    Scientific Calculator, HW, textbook positive
    attitude to class everyday.
  • 2) Your Marking Period Grade will be computed as
    follows
  • 45 - Tests (A midterm will be given and will be
    counted as 1 test grade.)
  • 20 - Homework
  • 15 - Notes/Reading Log
  • 10 - Class Participation
  • 10 - Projects
  • 3) Notes -I expect that you keep your notebook up
to date, ie. dates, lesson sections, in-class
    examples, warm-up problems homework. Notebook
    will be checked on Fridays.

8
Students Expectations (continued)
  • 4) HomeWork is always posted on the schools web
    page. (http//tccsnj.org/Homework/homework.html)
Homework will be checked on a daily basis. All
work must be shown for credit. All homework must
    be completed in PENCIL.
  • 5) Reading Log -Students are expected to read as
homework prior to a lesson in class. This will
prepare the student for the lesson and help their
understanding when the lesson is given. Students
will record their reading in their Reading Log
and get parent signatures. These logs will be
checked every Friday and be counted towards their
    grade.
  • 6) Academic integrity is an integral part of the
educational process at TCCS. Any student who
engages in academic dishonesty (ie. Cheating,
forgery, plagiarism, copying HW) will be given a
zero for the assignment and you will also receive
    a disciplinary referral.

9
Absences
  • We all have to be absent every once in a while.
It is your responsibility to make up all work
missed while you were absent. Homework is posted
on the web page. I will keep any handouts for
you just ask when you get back. There is math
office hours once a week and I am also available
during lunch pretty much everyday, please feel
free to come in for any help!!

10
Math Survival Kit
  • Mead Five Star 8 1/2" x 11", 2 Subject Notebook
  • 2" Binder
  • Staples Binder Hole Punch
  • Staples Pencil Pouch
  • One pack of 3inch by 5inch Index Cards
  • 1 Book sock (for textbook)
  • 1 pack of medium size post-its
  • 180-degree protractor
  • Three Red Pens
  • Three Green Pens
  • Two Highlighters
  • Five sharpened 2 Pencils
  • Manual Pencil Sharpener
  • Texas Instruments TI-30Xa Scientific Calculator
(Any scientific calculator can be used)

Classroom Policies
  • Be respectful to everyone.
  • No foul language.
  • No writing on desks, walls, bulletin boards,
    etceteras.
  • Come prepared to class everyday.
  • Pay attention sleeping is prohibited and rude!!
  • Be on time follow all school rules.
  • I love questions ask whenever the need arises
just make sure they are appropriate and tied into
    what we are currently doing.
  • Try the best that you can everyday if you are
feeling uncomfortable about a concept see me
right away after school dont wait till it is
    too late!
  • Bathroom pass You must sign out on the Sign Out
Log. Please do not ask for a pass while I am
teaching a new concept or during the 1st or last
    5 minutes of class.
  • Quizzes and tests will be announced ahead of time
(with the exception of PopQuizzes) even if you
are absent the day before you will be expected to
take the quiz or test! Remember to always check
    the HW website!
  • Grade progress sheets will be given out once a
semester and tests and quizzes will be returned
the next day. I do call home but for good and
bad reasons so please give me a good reason not
    a bad reason!
  • Lets all try to make this the best math class
ever Ill do my part I just ask that you do
    yours!!

12
Parent Conferences
  • Individual conferences will be held twice a year
as well as on a needed basis. Parent conferences
will cover the childs academic progress and will
discuss any problems /concerns /achievements in
    the classroom.
  • Parents can reach me at 201-833-9600 and via
    e-mail at tccsteacher_at_gmail.com

13
8th Grade Exit Requirement
  • Pass with 70 proficiency on the Grade 8
Mathematics Cumulative Test. The NJ Core
Curriculum categories to be tested include Number
and Number Sense, Computation and Estimation,
    Measurement/Geometry, Probability/Statistics, and
    Patterns, Functions, and Algebra.Complete an
end-of-year unit project in which students apply
their understanding of mathematical concepts in a
    real-world situation. The project provides
students with an opportunity to think more deeply
about concepts learned throughout the year.
Students are to investigate a situation, collect
and analyze data, and look for pattern and make a
    report/presentation.

14
Standardized Testing
  • All students in grade seven/eight will take the
NJ ASK test in the spring. The purpose of this
test is to measure the level of mathematics
proficiency that New Jersey students have
achieved by spring of the seventh/eighth grade.
  • These assessments will reflect the new
standards as outlined in the Core Curriculum
Content Standards for Mathematics established by
    New Jersey in July 2002.
