IEEE Microwave Education Fund

  • Discussed earlier in January, June October 2003
    ADCOM Meetings

5
Motion Approved inJune 2003 Meeting
  • Motion 14
  • Approve broadening the scope of the Microwave
    Engineering Graduate Scholarship Fund
(established in 1993) to include other
    educational aids, grants, scholarships,
    fellowships etc.
  • Approve renaming the fund to the IEEE Microwave
    Education Fund.
  • Approve that donors be recognized in naming of
    awards, if requested.
  • Funds are to be solicited from individuals,
    companies, and organizations.
  • Result 14 Approved (unanimous) 21- 0

6
Proposal to IEEE Foundation
  • A proposal drafted for inclusion in the Agenda of
IEEE Foundation meeting on November 21, 2003.
  • Draft discussed in October 2003 ADCOM
  • Draft contents
  • Background, Purpose, Depository of Funds, Source
of Funds, Recognition of Donor, Description of
the educational activities to be supported by the
IEEE Microwave Education Fund, Publicity of IEEE
    Microwave Education Fund, Documentation,
    Administration.

7
Microwave Education Fund
  • The funds will be provided only from outside
donors. In order to simplify the bookkeeping, the
Foundation will not be involved with the current
MTT funds in issuing and presenting the existing
    MTT Scholarships Fellowships.
  • If any of the awards will be named, such as John
Doe Microwave Graduate Fellowship, the Foundation
will probably stipulate some duration such as 5
to 10 years, and some minimum amount per year.
  • If the award is not a named award but the donor
wishes to be recognized, it could be done as
    follows. Microwave Graduate Fellowship (or
Scholarship or Grant) sponsored by John Doe
printed on the certificate and so publicized, and
this could be for a one-time award, or a second
    award, etc.

8
Microwave Education Fund
  • IEEE Foundation approved on Nov. 21, 2003
  • Announcement in March 2004 Magazine
  • Description in June 2004 Magazine

9
Proposed Efforts for Fund Development
  • July 2004, send letters to LS and LF of MTT-S,
    about 500, budget estimate 200
  • Prepare material for MTT-S Website
  • Pursue responses, establish contacts
  • Draft agreement, open account
  • Inform IEEE Foundation, fund dispersal
  • Amend Bylaws, Procedures Manual
  • Need Volunteers

10
Other Efforts for Fund Development (?)
  • Mailings to MTT-S memberships
  • Contacts and presentations to appropriate
individuals in RF and microwave industry.
  • Individual contacts with MTT Life Fellows and
    Life Senior Members.
  • Exploring other resource development avenues. (A
line item in dues renewal invoice to MTT-S
    members?)

12
Drexel Photonic Fellowship
  • Announcement modified to include
  • A Drexel Microwave Photonics Fellowship is
available to applicants working in the area of
    microwaves and optoelectronics. Specifics for
this award are the same as for other MTT Graduate
    Fellowships.

13
Publicity in Asia
  • Prof. S. Kawasaki making announcement and
application procedure more convenient to use by
    students in Asia.
  • How to prepare to the good application

14
MTT-S Graduate Fellowship Program - Summary
  • Number of applicants (for six 6K awards) seems
to have leveled off near 50 in 2003.
  • Direct mailing of flyer to student members of
MTT-S has been the effective method of
    publicizing this program
  • Need to update web announcement to permit
electronic filing of applications for 2004 awards
  • International participation continues

15
MTT-S Graduate Fellowship Program - Summary
  • Significant decline in the number of applicants
this year - reason is unclear
  • decline in total number (from 48 to 17) and the
number of countries represented (from 15 to 7)
  • Will need to mount a concerted effort to
advertise the program in 2004 to recover student
    interest
  • Need to update web announcement to permit
electronic filing of applications in future years
  • Winners of 2004 competition will be announced by
    April 15, 2004
  • Awards will be made at the Students Luncheon
    (Microwave Week 2004)

MTT-S Undergraduate/Pregraduate Scholarship
Program Fall 2003 Update
  • Sanjay Raman
  • Chair, Undergraduate Scholarship Program
  • MTT-S AdCom Education Subcommittee

19
2000-2003 Program Highlights
  • MTT-S Undergraduate Scholarships instituted in
2000 to attract undergraduates towards the fields
of RF and microwaves, and encourage them to
pursue graduate studies in these areas
  • Applications/Awards
  • 2000-2001 6 applications/5 awards
  • 2001-2002 8 applications/8 awards
    (3 US/5 International)
  • 2002-2003 4 applications/3 awards
  • (1 US/2 International)
  • 2003-2004 27 applications/11 awards (9 full/2
    half)
  • ( 8 US/3
    International)
  • Significant increase in applications, largely due
to expanded eligibility criteria first time
that full number of scholarships have been
    awarded.

20
Program Revisions in 2003
  • Objective Increase number of applicants by
widening pool of eligible students, recognizing
that MTT-S Graduate Fellowships go almost
exclusively to senior (i.e. Ph.D.) graduate
    students
  • Applicant should be an undergraduate student at
time of application, but may be a senior
undergrad, 1st year grad student, or in a
combined BS/MS program during the 2003-2004
    academic year
  • Project work may be conducted in conjunction with
    industry (e.g. during internship/co-op programs)
  • Revisions Approved at Fall 2002 MTT-S AdCom
    Meeting and implemented in 2003.

21
2004 Scholarship
  • Deadline May 1, 2004.
  • Announcement on MTT-S website, Microwave
    Magazine.

22
Future Issues
  • 2003 Scholarship announcement e-mail sent as
one-time outreach by IEEE Member Services ?
    believe e-mail announcement had significant
impact in increase awareness of program. However,
recent development of MTT-S e-Newsletter will
allow function to be performed internally by
    MTT-S
  • Try to increase awareness of scholarship program
in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
  • Increase award level to 2000 (from 1200)?

23
RF/Microwave Education Forum
  • Annual Gathering of Microwave Educators at IMS
  • Held at 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 IMS
  • Noon-time Panel Session with a Theme
  • Purposes
  • Encouraging Networking among Educators
  • Serving as a Venue for Discussions
  • Bringing Attention to Issues of Current Interest
