  • useful information about grant

  • well as specific feedback on one
  • of my papers from two experts in
  • the field of eating disorder
  • research.
  • I was also able to network with

I learned about current research in EDs
and state of the art treatments. I also met and
conversed with numerous other ED practitioners,
many of whom are very accomplished in the field.
my clinical work improved, and I made
connections with colleagues that I have since
used to consult with about difficult
cases. I have conducted several workshops to
providers across NC from rural areas who had
little knowledge about the treatment of EDs. My
hope is that their patients have been better
served as a result of this scholarship.

it was a hands-down, all-around invaluable
and invigorating experience! Not only did I
benefit from networking with both established
and early career researchers, but I had the
opportunity to present my dissertation findings
during a special paper session for
scholarship recipients. I also gained a deeper
appreciation for the outstanding talent and
energy of the AED community itself!

AED Exposure to current research has afforded
me a deeper comprehension of different treatment
modalities (which we adapted to our) outpatient
treatment program in Israel participation at

beneficial and thought provoking I have no
doubt that this opportunity has greatly enhanced
my professional capabilities and proved to be an
invaluable experience .

  • occasions.
  • I learned about different treatment
  • modalities to enrich our clinical
  • practice. I also learned about new
  • theoretical approaches that gave
  • me new ideas of how to approach
  • my research.
  • I have since been in contact with
  • experts from different parts of the
  • world,and of course, have
  • transmitted my experience to my
  • students and colleagues.
  • Overall, it has been a very enhancing

  • I was in the final writing stages of writing my
doctorate in systemic psychotherapy and found the
exposure to the wide variety of research and
clinical practices invaluable in writing my
    thesis
  • the opportunity invigorated my resolve to
continue my own work in this field both as a
    clinician and teacher.
  • Thank you AED.

I found the conference very interesting and very
useful in my every day clinical practice and in
my teaching at the University. At that time,I
would not have been able to attend without the
support from the Academy I am grateful to this
program and I hope it can continue to help other
clinicians as it did me.

As a student completing my PhD in Clinical
PsychologyI was especially grateful to be given
the chance to talk with some of the leading
specialists in the field.. I was honoured to
present my research at the Junior Investigator
Travel Fellow paper session, a nerve-wracking
but invaluable learning experience. I have no
doubt that this opportunity has enhanced my work
as a clinical researcher in the field of eating
disorders.

A great deal of my professional growth and
development is a direct result of being an AED
member and attending the 2005 ICED In the last
year I became a founding member of Metro State
Eating Disorders Group, an organization
providing eating disorders educational outreach.
I networked with other AED members to develop
recommendations regarding Colorado schools
Wellness Policy. I participated on the
University of Colorado Eating Disorders Task
Force, which developed a campus-wide Body Image
Month Students in my eating disorders courses
enjoy the benefits of my attendance at AED
conferences through the sharing of cutting edge
clinical strategies and research. I thank the
donors to the AED scholarship fund for the
opportunity to attend last year's conference!

Investigator Fellowship Recipient
Receiving the AED Junior Investigator Travel
Fellowship Award during my doctoral studies
contributed to my research career in 5 critical
ways I received training in research design,
statistical methods, and grant writing. I was
able to present preliminary data from my doctoral
research and receive feedback from a
diverse group of researchers and practitioners
I was able to meet and interact with a number
of experts in the field I learned about the
broad picture of the field of weight-related
disorder prevention, which helped me to elucidate
the most pertinent research questions to be
addressed in forthcoming research. These
important connections have led to my current
membership on the AED Public Affairs Committee.
I remain grateful for the opportunities this
scholarship provided to me and for the influence
it has had on my career.

Recipient2004
  • The travel fellowship made my dream a reality! I
was able to make presentation in Orlando! The
award helped me not only economically but also
gave me an opportunity to attend the Teaching Day
where I learned a lot of things as a researcher,
and experts gave me a lot of advice on my
    research.
  • In Japan, I received much recognition for getting
this award, and I got tenure at a university as
well as managed to succeed in getting a research
    grant.
  • I hope many more young people from all over the
world will be able to have benefit from the AED
Travel Fellowship, in the same way that I did.

AED is a fabulous organization. Getting the
clinical scholarship allowed me to attend the
2004 conference, get acquainted with the
organization, and update my clinical skills. I
am grateful to those who contributed to the
scholarship fund and made my conference
attendance a possibility. Sharlene Wedin, Psy.

  • The AED  clinician Scholarship award allowed me
the opportunity toupdate on the latest cutting
    edge research in the field
  • .proved an enriching and stimulating opportunity
to meet with experts and discuss contemporary
ideas in research and clinical work.  I was
touched by how encouraging and approachable
leading researchers across the globe are in
    sharing and debating ideas.
  • having just moved from a clinical to an academic
post in Oxford , and thus in the stages of
planning research focus. It was thus invaluable
to hear about ongoing research and new data prior
to its publication, and enthusing to meet new
colleagues ... The presentations and ideas been
invaluable  in  refining,  and setting in
context, my own  research focus and our clinical
    programme here in Oxford
  • .... I am truly grateful to the scholarship
    committee for the award,
  • many thanks.

  • The Research Training Teaching Day organized by
Dr. Ruth Striegel-Moore and Dr. Cynthia Bulik
covered all the essential topics pertaining to
developing a career as a eating disorder
researcher, such as writing a fundable grant,
getting your paper published in IJED, and
developing an effective mentor relationship. The
mentors were extremely friendly and encouraging,
and they provided helpful advice on everything
from evaluating research methods to balancing a
research career, clinical work, and a family
    life.
  • Of course, I learned about the newest
developments in eating disorder research I
also gained a more international perspective on
    eating disorder research.
  • attending ICED 2006 allowed me to meet and learn
from professionals from around the world who are
at the forefront of eating disorder research,
    treatment, and prevention.

  • AED has benefitted me by keeping me up to date on
the latest research while simultaneously keeping
me abreast of issues observed by practitioners
which may be relevant to study empirically...
  • AED has also been a great asset to those I work
with, both colleagues and clinical patients. I am
able to share interesting new findings that
converge with the research interests of
co-workers who have not been able to attend the
conference. This is especially beneficial when
research is underway, or so new that it has not
yet been publishedattending conferences such as
AED allows researchers to "spread the word"

  • I felt that the research training teaching day
was extremely valuable, because important topics
pertaining to the career of a researcher were
covered and emphasized by the presenters. The
time we spent with the mentors was also an
essential part of this training session, we were
able to learn from their experience as
researchers, and also ask for some advice
    regarding our projects
  • ... This award helped me feel more integrated in
    the AED
  • Therefore, I feel we need to support this AED
initiative in every possible way because the AED
    Student/Early Career Investigator Travel
Fellowship means the ED field welcomes diversity
    and renovation.

  • Attending the international conference as a
travel fellow was a fantastic opportunity.  I
have just completed my first year of graduate
school, and since I am very early on in my
career, it was the first time I had the
opportunity to meet with and talk to leading
researchers in the field other than my immediate
    mentors.
  • I am also employing the knowledge I acquired at
the fellowship workshop about statistics and
grant writing as I prepare my first grant this
    summer.
  •  In addition, it enabled me to present the
findings from the latest treatment research to
the other students at my University who are
participating in our eating disorders practicum.
