  • By Amshi Stephenson, Caitlin Colvin, and Arin
    McGovern

2
What is Ecstasy?
  • Ecstasy (a.k.a.MDMA) is a synthetic drug with
    amphetamine- like and hallucinogenic properties.
Ecstasy is a stimulant. It is a major Club
drug. It was originally developed as a diet aid.

3
Whats in it?
  • MDP2P
  • Isosafrole
  • Can be cut with ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and
    even caffeine and over-the-counter medications
  • It is believed that the contents of a pill can be
identified based on its logo or color (e.g.- red
pills are believed to contain mescaline, brown
pills assumed to contain heroin, etc.)

  • Long Term
  • Impairs brains ability to learn or retain
    knowledge.
  • Causes serotonin receptors to produce more
rapidly, which causes the brain to shrink.

6
How is it used?
  • Taken in pill form, users may take them at
clubs or parties, to keep themselves dancing and
    for mood enhancement.

7
Random Info
  • People who use ecstasy normally have pacifiers
to suck on after they take them so that it
prevents their jaw from locking. A locked jaw
normally requires surgery to fix. People
normally make colorful bead necklaces or
bracelets and give them to people say they are
friends, when this is completely pointless
because they will not remember them the next day.

8
What does it do to the body?
  • Ecstasy raises your body temperature and heart
rate. Its greatest danger is heat stroke, which
can cause death if not treated immediately. It
can cause severe dehydration, and this can in
turn lead to liver or kidney failure.

9
What does it do to the brain?
  • Ecstasy causes you to be more likely to engage
in risky behaviors, such as binge drinking,
cigarette smoking, and having multiple sexual
partners, which leads to unprotected sex which
can lead to multiple STDs or pregnancy. Can
damage the cells which create serotonin, which is
needed to control mood, memory and appetite.

10
Is it addictive and why?
  • Ecstasy is not physiologically addictive, but
people can develop a psychological dependence on
it, for they think that it is needed for life to
    go on/ function normally.

11
How do you know if someone is using it?
  • Danger Signs
  • More frequent use
  • Needing more to achieve the same effect
  • Spending time thinking about the drug
  • Going broke from spending money you dont have
  • Miss or fail classes
  • Lose old friends, so you can replace them with
people who also do the drug
  • Depression without it

12
Is there any treatment?
  • Long term inpatient drug and alcohol
rehabilitation program is a good way of
rehabilitation for people who have drug and
alcohol abuse backgrounds, but can also be for
forming addicts. This treatment involves a period
of three to six months so as to provide the
individual with an extensive change of
environment as well as care twenty-four hours a
    day.
