Clinical Neuroscience Branch
Major Goals
  • To advance our understanding of the
  • clinical neurobiology of drug abuse and
    addiction
  • To advance our understanding of the biological
    etiology of drug addiction

6
Clinical Neuroscience Branch
  • Research Programs
  • Neurobiology of Addiction
  • Translational Research
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Biological Etiology/Human Genetics/Individual
    Differences
  • Comorbidity
  • Neurobiology of HIV/AIDS Neurobiology of
    Risky Behavior
  • Neurobiology of Human Pain and Analgesia

7
Behavioral and Brain Development Branch
8
Behavioral and Brain Development Branch
Major Goals
  • Increase understanding of how developmental
processes and outcomes in humans are affected by
drug use/exposure and related factors (e.g.,
    environment)
  • Increase understanding of behavioral and brain
processes in human development as directly
related to drug use, drug abuse, and associated
    risk behaviors
  • Support research on understanding brain and
behavioral processes in normal development that
may be influenced by drug exposure
  • Support research on interventions designed to
    minimize negative consequences of drug
use/exposure and related factors on human
    development

9
Behavioral and Brain Development Branch
Research Programs
  • Prenatal Drug Exposure Developmental Outcomes
  • Postnatal Effects of Drug Use/Abuse
    Behavioral/Brain Development
  • Interventions Ameliorate Negative
    Consequences of Drug Exposure/Environment, Use,
    and Abuse
  • Pediatric Neuroimaging Application in
    Brain/Behavioral Development
  • Developmental Processes Underlying Risk
    Behaviors (e.g., HIV risk
  • behaviors)
  • Drug Use Consequences among Youth w/ Mental
    Health Conditions

10
Behavioral IntegrativeTreatment Branch
11
Behavioral Integrative Treatment Branch
Major Goals
  • To produce effective and ultimately community
    friendly behavioral treatments (including
    integrative behavioral and pharmacological
    treatments and complementary/ alternative
treatments) for drug abuse and addiction
  • To determine the best ways to promote adherence
to drug abuse treatments, including adherence to
    treatments for comorbid disorders (e.g.,
HIV/AIDS, depression, etc.) in drug abusing
    populations

12
Behavioral Integrative Treatment Branch
  • Research Programs
  • Behavioral Therapies Development
  • Combined Behavioral with Pharmacotherapies
  • AIDS Risk Reduction
  • Comorbidity Mental and Drug Abuse Disorders
  • Drug Abuse Treatment in Primary Care Settings
  • Special Populations

13
Division of Clinical Neuroscience and Behavioral
Research (DCNBR)
Opportunities for Advancement of the Science
  • translational research
  • new approaches to behavioral treatment
  • emphasis on gene-environment-development
    interaction
  • brain imaging of genetic variations behavioral
    treatment
  • comorbidity
  • assess early environmental influences (e.g.,
    drugs stress
  • drugs violence drugs deprivation) on
    development
  • neurobiology
  • sleep disturbance and drug abuse/addiction

Division of Clinical Neuroscience and Behavioral
Research (DCNBR)
Attracting New Investigators -- New PIs PIs
New to NIDA
  • I/START (Imaging/Science Track Award for
    Research Transition)
  • Program
  • Using R21s and R03s as beginner grants
  • RFAs
  • R21 only
  • mixed R21/R01 with different review criteria
  • Organizing meetings in new program areas
  • Encouraging junior investigators to attend
    workshops
  • Grant-writing workshops
  • Minority Supplements
  • Training infrastructure (T32s, centers, Ks)
