Area Profile
  • An old city of stately buildings, Zell am See is
a delightful place to stroll in, when you are not
skiing. The town sits on a mini-peninsula that
juts into a pretty alpine lake. Above the town is
the Schmittenhoehe ski area, with 46 miles of
groomed slopes in open snowfields at the top and
trails through the trees on lower sections. But
this is only part of the attraction. Zell is
partner with Kaprun and marketed with the smaller
village as the "Europe Sport Region." Kaprun, 10
minutes away by bus, was the scene of the tragic
subway fire in November 2000. It has vast
snowfields on the glacier under the Kitzsteinhorn
mountain. Statistics for the overall region
include 80 miles of marked trails, 56 lifts, a
highest vertical of more than 2270 meters and a
    longest run of six kilometers.

Zell am See
  • Most of the Zell-Am-See skiing is on the
Schmittenhöe (Sugar loaf), a rounded dumpling of
a mountain, with mostly amiable skiing in a
horseshoe around Zell am See. There are some
steeper slopes down the face of the bowl but the
reds are fairly gentle, long and scenic. They
frequently snake through pine forest and over
open, undulating pasture. The lifts have been
improved recently. A modern gondola now departs
from the middle of the village but the lovely old
cable car is still there, making its stately
progress up the Sonnalm. The Areitbahn gondola
from Schuttdorf opened a few years ago and is
often a good alternative when Zell is busy.
