Title: The Technology Muscle Car of Science Education

1
The Technology Muscle Car of Science Education
Computer Based Labs
Mack Bailey Rock Hill High School
2
  • Purpose Share activities using technology for
    education.
  • Technology is often used for the sake of
technology, not for the sake of learning just
as fancy wheels, shiny manifolds, chromed
exhausts are often used for show not for go!?
  • However, students respond favorably to a variety
of creative activities that are true to the
science concepts if the rubber meets the
    road!

3
  • Boyles Law as an example.
  • Lets pretend were a middle or high school
physical science, physics, or chemistry class.
  • Well start with a little song, discuss some
theory, carry out a lab, analyze our data, share
    our results and suggestions!

4
  • A state variable is a property of the system
that depends only on its present state. A state
variable does not depend in any way on the
system's past (or future). In other word, the
value of a state variable does not depend on how
a system arrived at the present state it depends
only on the characteristics of the present
state. Chemistry, Zumdahl and Zumdahl, Houghton
    Mifflin Co., 2003
  • Three State Variables P, V, and T. HOLY MOL-EE,
    from Sing Smart

5
  • Ideal Gas Law
  • pV nRT
  • Constant amount of gas in a container (n)
  • Constant (room) temperature, more or less (T)
  • R is the gas constant
  • So, pV is a constant pV k, p k/V
  • Inverse relationship of p and V

6
  • Focus on p and V.
  • Experimentally develop a relationship between p
    and V.
  • Clean, reliable experiment
  • And well do some variations, time permitting.

7
  • Cable and adaptor for CBL to sensor
  • AC Adaptor for CBL
  • CBL-to-TI cable (black 180 for TI-84, 90 for
    TI-83)
  • TI to laptop cable (gray or fancy USB)
  • You and your partner will need
  • CBL unit
  • TI calculator
  • Laptop
  • Pressure sensor with syringe

8
  • Assemble equipment per diagram and procedures.
  • Generate about six data points,
  • Then exchange roles and collect six more data
    points OK to duplicate points.

10
  • Transfer your data to the laptop via LoggerPro
  • Use gray or fancy cable
  • Open LoggerPro software on laptop
  • Cancel windows then select the calculator icon
  • For gray, use Com1 for fancy, use the USB. . .
  • Select your two lists, L1 and L2

11
  • Double-click on head of data column and add
    title, unit, etc.
  • Double-click graph, itself, to get rid of
    connecting lines (Connect Points)
  • Evaluate inverse relationship add calculated
    column
  • Data
  • New Calculated Column
  • Modify labels and units
  • Equation will be 1/volume
  • Double-click on y-axis again and select new
    variable
  • Adjust for 1mL extra volume in tubing?!

12
  • Higher level variation non-ideal gas
    behavior!
  • Fill syringe with butane by pulling plunger out
and allowing gas to enter replace plunger and
warm by shaking and holding in hand.
  • Open valve to let some gas out by pressing
plunger down about 1/5 of way.
  • Repeat data-gathering process!

13
  • When are CBLs best utilized?
  • Especially for labs when specific and/or short
    time increments are important motion,
    temperature trends, etc.
  • When many, many data points are to be taken.
  • When environment makes it dangerous to use
    traditional equipment (freezing point)

14
  • Problems with CBLs
  • May not help develop graphing and data analysis
    skills
  • Seem to be less concrete exposure to parameters
    lose concept
  • Finicky!!

15
  • Experiment with LoggerPro to make pretty graph
and maybe do a linear or curve fit.
  • List two other possible variations.
  • Suggest two other uses youve done, seen, or
    thought of for CBLs!
  • Go home and REV UP your MUSCLE CAR!
