Title: The beginning
1(No Transcript)
2The beginning
- The biodiesel production process has been in use
since the mid 1800s - The first diesel engines were designed to run on
biofuels (farmed crops)
3Why is biodiesel getting so much attention?
- It can be used in any diesel engine
- Cleaner burning than petroleum diesel
- Renewable feedstock can be grown almost anywhere
- Biodiesel blends easily with petroleum diesel
(B2, B5, B10, B20, B50) and can use existing
distribution channels - State and federal mandates are creating higher
demand
4U.S. biodiesel market is growing

5Why is BBDs process Better?
- Uses a variety of feedstocks
- Lower production costs
- Less environmental impact
- Faster production timelines
- Higher production capacity
- Less capital intensive
6Where feedstock comes from
- Plant matter feedstock
- Rapeseed (canola oil), Mustard seed, Palm oil,
Soybean oil - Animal fat sources
- Livestock operations, Meat processing
- Other oil sources
- Waste oils, cooking oils
7Feedstock Comparison
- Better Biodiesel
- Accepts multiple feedstock in same processor,
regardless of fatty acid content - Flexible feedstock options give BBD strategic
advantages
- Conventional
- Typically, can handle only limited types of
feedstock - Restricted feedstock options result in increased
costs, timelines
8Production Methods
- Better Biodiesel
- No caustic chemicals used in our continuous flow
process - Our catalyst is not imparted into the fuel
- No water washing
- Glycerin by-product is higher grade
- Conventional
- Caustic chemical used as catalyst must be washed
from fuel - Washing requires large amounts of water that then
must be purified by evaporation or drying - Glycerin by-product is also tainted
9Production Costs
The majority of conventional biodiesel
processors, at current feedstock prices, spend
2.50 minimum per gallon in production costs.
Because of our cost effective process we save
at least 25 on production costs.
10Production Facility
- Better Biodiesel
- A 10 million gallon module requires one 8 x 40
foot container - Modules can be built in 30 days
- Total space needed for module and storage tanks
is 4,500 sq. ft.
- Conventional
- Producing 10 million gallons requires several
acres of land - Typical plants require more space - more permits
- more time
1112 million gallon per year conventional
production facility
10 million gallon per year Better Biodiesel module
12Quality Control
- Better Biodiesel
- Each module contains over 100 computer sensors
and monitors - Every gallon of fuel meets the ASTMD-6751
standard for pure biodiesel
- Conventional
- Inconsistent quality can be a problem for
conventional batch manufacturers
13Responsive to Market
- Better Biodiesel
- Able to respond to fluctuating market demands
quickly
- Conventional
- Batch processing and restricted feedstocks impede
market response
14Biodiesel Market Factors
- Government incentives and mandates expected to
continue - Emerging markets such as China, Asia and India
have growing demands for clean, renewable energy
sources - U.S. consumers are demanding clean, renewable
fuel options nationwide
15Biodiesel Emissions
- Of the current biofuels, biodiesel is the
only one to have successfully completed emissions
testing in accordance with the Clean Air Act.
Cleaner fuels result in health care savings.
According to Richard Kassel of the Natural
Resources Defense Council, because biodiesel
emissions pose fewer health risks, biodiesel
coupled with new diesel engine requirements
(effective Jan 2007) will reduce health care
costs. In a recent interview Mr. Kassel stated,
Every dollar invested in cleaner diesel engines
yields 17 in health benefits.
16Good Mileage?
Ernie Rogers in a VW Diesel Beetle
- Park City, UT to Davenport, Iowa
- 1,209 miles
- on 15.5 gallons of B5 diesel 78 miles per
gallon
17His car
Ernie is a careful driver, not a speeder. But the
fact remains that diesel engines get better
mileage.
Its generally accepted that diesel cars get
about 20-30 percent better mileage than gasoline
cars, on average.
18In a recent NPR Marketplace story
- JD Power analyst Jeff Schuster says he
predicts clean diesel cars will have a 10 percent
market share within a decade. - Jeff ShusterWe are actually expecting diesel
engines to overtake the hybrid vehicle in terms
of overall share by the 2009 timeframe.
19Better Biodiesels Growth and Production Capacity
- BBD expects to ramp up its production volume
quickly - First 12 months 39 Million Gallons
- Second year 111 Million Gallons
- Third year 183 Million Gallons

The Earthrace is the worlds first raceboat
powered by biodiesel. It will attempt to beat the
world record of 75 days for circumnavigation.
Its mission is to raise awareness about
renewable fuels and environmental issues.
The 78 foot Earthrace is a trimaran with a unique
wave piercing hull design.
21As The Earthraces exclusive fuel supplier,
Better Biodiesel, will share the world stage with
Earthrace. In addition to a BBD logo on the boat,
Earthrace will actively promote BBDs biodiesel
fuel and technology in their educational and
publicity activities. Their pre-race tour
includes cities along the Atlantic and Gulf
coasts. More at www.Earthrace.net
